My name is Lucas Ratson and my great grandfather was a survivor of the Holocaust. I have thought long and hard about my Mitzvah project for my Bar Mitzvah because I really want to make a difference.
As a descendent of a survivor, I feel it is important to preserve the history of the Jewish people and allow children to learn the history of the Jewish people and their religion. I have decided to start a charitable organization to raise money that will allow us to grant scholarships to other descendents to give them the same opportunities I have had to educate them and continue on with our traditions by attending Hebrew school at local and one day national synagogues. I also hope to raise money to provide education to the public school systems as well starting right here in my home state of Pennsylvania.
My great grandfather Boris Eisenstein was a survivor of the Holocaust and although I was only 8 months old when he passed away I am reminded how much joy he had spending time with me and having the comfort of seeing his family tree continue to another generation.
I have decided to name my organization Project Boris to honor him. I chose the Phoenix embracing the Star of David as the symbol of the organization because like so many times in history the Jewish people have risen from the ashes and continue to live on.
I am in the process of having all the paperwork filed and getting the organization set up. This will help me get started and hopefully provide the first scholarship by my Bar Mitzvah and provide educational information to my own school district. I will be sending letters of donation out to all who choose to fund this project and when the charity is fully set up I will send you a donation receipt.
