On Saturday 16 April at 18.58 hrs (local time) an earthquake of 7.8 degrees was registered on the coast of Ecuador. The epicenter was located between the towns of Cojimíes and Pedernales, north of the province of Manabi, leaving at least 586 dead, over 5,000 wounded, and thousands displaced and homeless so far.
This number is rising fast.
Although efforts are focused currently on the rescue of those trapped and the removal of bodies, there is little being done about those left homeless, affected by the collapsing of buildings. In order to normalize the situation of communities, Ecuadorian architects are already in motion to begin to quantify the damage and take immediate action in the homes and infrastructures that require it.
With this in mind, more than 14 architectural groups have joined other independent groups to form a team that is already planning the reconstruction and construction of temporary emergency shelter homes for those in immediate need.
Architects recently shared the first look of Project Shelter Jama-Coaque the first prototype for transitional emergency shelter housing as a postearthquake response (see below photographs). The prototype responds to the urgent needs of people affected by the collapse of housing in vulnerable areas of the city and require immediate shelter.
SPECIFIC OBJECTIVE:
Build a pilot shelter in the town of Coaque by using pallets, local resources and donated materials. This shelter will provide housing to 200 individuals, a kitchen-diner fit to serve 2000 people, and will also serve as a strategic warehouse for resources (water, food, medicine) sent and gathered by distant cities.
To enable its development and construction, ActuemosEcuador is looking to raise $10000 (~£8500), to lift the project off the ground. Materials have been already been collected and land found, the money raised will go towards tools and transportation costs. There is need for immediate action but with the money raised the first shelters could be up and in place within 7 days.
We will be sending all money raised directly to Project Shelter Jama-Coaque without the involvement of any third parties.

AREA OF INFLUENCE
Coaque is a town located 10km (5miles) south of Pedernales. It has been estimated that 2000 people live in the Coaque community and at least 80% of them are devoid of housing. The space where the shelter will be built is an old soccer field.
METHODOLOGY
The construction of the first shelter will employ a multi-module design. Each module will be 25x9 meters (82x29ft). It will be built with wooden pallets, bamboo cane (local) and sailcloth.
The pilot shelter will consist of three modules and a sanitary system.
· Module 1: Housing
· Module 2: Diner, Kitchen
· Module 3: Nursery & Warehouse
· Sanitary System
The construction will have three phases and will be performed by voluntaries, organized in three strategic groups. Each group will stay in the field for five days and consists of six teams with a leader architect.
Jose Argudo is an Ecuadorian citizen with direct connections to CEPP. Due to the rules of Go Fund Me all money will be deposited into a UK bank account from where it will be transferred in full directly to the relevant CEPP account. Alice and Jose will be returning to Ecuador soon to help and contribute to the rebuilding efforts.

Antecedentes
El día 16 de abril de 2016 ocurrió en Ecuador un terremoto de 7.8 grados en la escala de Richter, causado por un proceso de subducción de la placa tectónica de Nazca y Sudamericana. El suceso ha sido el más fuerte vivido en la últimas décadas, su epicentro se ubicó frente a la ciudad de Pedernales y afectó en mayor nivel a la región de Manabí.
A consecuencia del terremoto se estima murieron más de 500 personas, y alrededor de 40.000 fueron desplazadas, obligando a muchas familias a reubicarse en comunidades lejanas de la montaña o junto a la carretera. Ante esta situación se vuelve urgente la creación de albergues temporales que provean de un espacio seguro y un lugar donde distribuir alimentos a las personas más afectadas.
Se conoce de varios casos a nivel mundial que ejemplifican la eficiencia económica de la construcción de infraestructura a base de pallets. Los pallets son prefabricados a base de madera, los cuales al final de su ciclo de vida suelen ser quemados. La construcción con pallets ha demostrado ser rápida a la vez que emplea material reciclado de bajo costo. Por tal razón, se considera que este material sería óptimo para la construcción de albergues temporales en corto plazo.
Objetivo general:
Construir en corto tiempo albergues temporales que acojan a las familias afectadas por el terremoto en la región de Manabí.
Objetivo específico:
Construir un albergue piloto en Coaque a base de pallets, material de la zona y lona que proveerá de un albergue a 600 personas, proveerá de una cocina - comedor para 2000 personas y funcionará como un centro de acopio de alimentos y agua.
Área de trabajo
El proyecto piloto se realizará en la comunidad Coaque ubicada al sur de Pedernales. Se estima que alrededor de 2000 personas viven en la comunidad y al menos un 80% ha perdido su vivienda. El espacio que se utilizará inicialmente para la construcción del albergue es la antigua cancha fútbol, obsérvese en el gráfico.
