Project Hand Food Pantry Chula Vista/ San Diego

Since 1946 Lutheran Social Services has cared for hungry and vulnerable women, men and children throughout San Diego. The needs have grown, just as the population has, over the 73 years since. Our “Project Hand” food pantry, currently located at St Mark’s Lutheran Church in Chula Vista, serves about 2,000 family members every monthly.

The persons who come for food vary by age, race and economic status.  Some are homeless or live paycheck to paycheck, with the threat of homelessness looming.  Those we serve include military members, students, singles, and families from the surrounding community.  A growing number of seniors are now raising their grandchildren and even great-grandchildren.  Living on the fixed income of their Social Security benefits, they struggle to make ends meet.  After their bills are paid their cupboards are bare.

Desperate and in need of help, these individuals rely on LSS to assist them at the end of the month, when their resources run low. LSS is committed to addressing this need within the Chula Vista community.

But the high demand for food has increased. And, the costs of responding to that demand have also increased.
We need your help!  We invite you to become a part of the solution for the many students, individuals, children, and families who suffer daily. Working together we can make a huge impact and support many people!
Your contribution will ensure our continued ability to provide these services. Please be an “Everyday Hero” for our community, and pledge a monthly amount, a one-time gift, or commit to an annual pledge

Goal: $50,000 annually to enable us to keep the pantry open, staffed and to purchase the food necessary to meet the growing daily demands.

OUR HISTORY

LSS has been providing groceries to hungry San Diego citizens since 1946.
After the end of World War II veterans came back home, families were formed, or reunited, and all Americans hoped the violence and nightmares of war would be replaced by the peace and prosperity of the American Dream.
Returning patriots faced a shortage of affordable housing and a lack of employment income. In addition, food insecurity was an enormous struggle for many. That’s when Lutheran Social Services Southern California came into existence.
