Private-Parts is a documentary that aims to explore the effects that the Ontario sex education curriculum changes have had on its students, teachers and parents. We ask a variety of interviewees why they think that these recent changes have happened and how they have been affected by them. The story is told through the interviewees’ own words and the viewer is given an intimate perspective into their lives by seeing their homes and their families. We want to show all sides of opinion in order to fully understand the complexity of the topic.

‘The Health and Physical Education Curriculum’ is the document that the topic of sex-education is included in. The recent changes that this film covers include the statement of the 2015 curriculum in which topics like consent, the LGBT community, indigenous culture, and cyberbullying were added to a curriculum last updated in 1998. Some people supported the 2015 curriculum because of its inclusivity and further knowledge, yet others criticized it because they would prefer to teach their child the material themselves or they don't agree with the material itself. Private-Parts explores both of these perspectives.

In 2018 the current provincial government repealed the 2015 curriculum. Now, children are being taught an interim curriculum very similar to the 1998 version. We are driven to make this documentary because we want to fully understand the effects that education has on society and because we believe in the importance of the topic.

The issue is current and quickly evolving. People have launched legal challenges against this curriculum repeal for being unconstitutional and against The Charter of Rights and Freedoms. On the other hand, we have spoken to people who are relieved by this rollback, as they deem that it maintains their child's innocence, and does not teach what they consider to be false information. We’ve interviewed politicians, M.P.P.’s like former Premier of Ontario Kathleen Wynne. We are also interviewing many families, children, school board trustees and students. As well, we are holding group interviews with young children so we can share their opinions and promote discussion to see how the Sex Ed curriculum affects them.

A donation of any amount is significantly helpful and immensely appreciated.
