Primary School Support - Virunga

$14,700 of $18,000 goal

Raised by 92 people in 7 months
Kanyaruchinya primary school is one of the main schools near the Nyiragongo Volcano  in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Many tourists would hike this volcano and stay in the beautiful Virunga National Park with the help of porters and other helpers. The income they received from tourism was directly used to support their families and schooling their children by paying fees and providing school tools such as note books, pens, school uniforms and shoes etc.

Unfortunately, due to the recent abduction of 2 british tourists  on May 11th, 2018, the Virunga National Park decided to close down temporarily for safety.  Without tourism activities, many of the porters and those working in the park have found themselves unemployed, and without income. With this reality, their children may not be able to attend school in September. We have identified 167 children who study at Kanyaruchinya and are raising funds to pay for their school fees and supplies for the year, amounting to $96 USD per student.

The local tour operators based in Goma, DRC have come together to organize this fundraiser in time for the school year and to raise awareness for the importance of conservation in Africa's most biodiverse park. Any support is greatly appreciated, so we can show the importance tourism brings to the community and help these children stay in school until the park can be reopened. Thank you!

Thank you to all of our donors! We are very excited to hear that Virunga National Park is tentatively planning to open again on February 15, 2019! This may not guarantee automatic jobs again to the community, but it is a very promising step, so we are watching with hope.

Please continue to keep the Kanyaruchinya community in your thoughts as we start the 2nd half of the school year. We have raised nearly $12,000 which is amazing. Thank you for helping these kids to stay in school. Asante sana and merci!

Thank you to all of our donors! We have been able to support the 167 kids to school this year who were unable to pay when their parents lost their jobs due to the closure of Virunga earlier this year.

Below is a photo of some of the kids with the President of the Porter's Parents Committee at the school. They are so grateful as a community for our help, but our work is not finished. Though the park may reopen in 2019, right now the students will be unable to continue the second semester of school without the rest of the funding. We are nearly halfway to our goal. Would you consider forwarding this message to anyone in your network who shares a love for Virunga, the DRC, and the amazing VN Park staff and community?? Asanteni Sana!

An update below on the school from our DRC contact Jean Bosco - anything you can do to share the campaign would be incredibly helpful. Thank you again for your support!

First of all the community and us would like to reiterate our gratefulness to your usual and continued support for the favor of education of 167 kids at Kanyaruchinya primary school.

The below is the updated situation:

This primary school reopened on September 5th, 2018 and all the 167 kids reported present as we had already discussed, through several meetings,
with their parents and the school team management in order to give more chance to all the kids.

From your donations, the total amount of USD 6,662 was received in 3 different wire transfers in our account through the GoFundMe platform.

The first wire transfer of USD 3,612 and this contributed much to the purchase of the 2/3 of needed school tools for the 167 kids. A total
amount of USD 3,507 was spent on these school tools.

We had long meetings and negociations with the school team management
about how we could pay the year school fees and an agreement was reached
by paying the school year fees in different weekly installments.

The second and third wire transfers of respectively USD 1,670 and USD 1,380 were also received and were spent as installments on 2018-2019 school year fees as following:

1. September 5th to September 12th, 2018: USD 1,000
2. September 13th to September 20th, 2018: USD 1,000
3. September 21st to September 28th, 2018: USD 1,000

Actually from the whole total amount received of USD 6,662, after the deduction of all spent amounts, we remain in our account USD 155 without
considering bank fees which have to be deducted.

Based on the above details, we are entering a red period in terms of paying school fees on time as agreed with the school because for this week which counts from September 29th to October 6th, 2018, we don't have funds.

As per my knowledge, Ms Megan has about an amount of USD 550 available in GofundMe but still not enough.

However, we are in touch day to day with the school management team in order for them to remain patient for the general benefit of the education of the 167 kids.

In conclusion this is the current situation which requires more attention although your efforts already deployed remain incredible and the community remains extremely grateful to all your continued support!

Best regards,

Jean Bosco
