$1,640 of $3,000 goal

Raised by 20 people in 12 months
Hi! My name is Pricilla Westlake. I am a 22-year-old, fourth year university student studying journalism in beautiful Vancouver, Canada. My passions are writing, travelling and sports, however my ultimate love is for the sport of lawn bowling. This year marks my 4th year on Team Canada's national Senior Squad and I am very excited to see what year five has in store for me as well. Help me in my goal to represent Canada at the World Indoor Cup singles championships in Warilla, New South Wales, Australia March 2018. Additionally, if I am selected, you could potentially be helping me on my journey back to the World (U25) Youth Championships on Queensland's Gold Coast in Australia also next Spring, in which I hope to defend my World U25 Singles Title and medal in the mixed pairs discipline. My ultimate dream though is to compete for Canada as a part of Team Canada's Commonwealth Games team next April in one of the biggest events the sport of bowls has to offer. Please help make my dreams become a reality and follow me in my journey as I strive to compete in all three international competitions! Thank you in advance for your generous support. Hi my name is Pricilla Westlake.
Welcome to the gofundme page dedicated to raising funds to help with my travel and competition related expenses for when I lawn bowl in Australia in Spring 2018.

Why is Pricilla going to lawn bowl in Australia 2018?

Having recently won my third consecutive Canadian indoor national singles title (October 29th to November 4th, 2017), I won the opportunity to compete in the World indoor singles cup in Warilla, New South Wales, Australia representing Canada March 6th to March 15th, 2017.

I am very much looking forward to having the opportunity to represent Canada in my favourite sport, lawn bowling. I’ve said this before and I will say it again, it is always an honour and a privilege to wear the maple leaf on any international stage.

I started competing for Canada within my first year of being on the national lawn bowling team in 2014. The first national team training camp I attended was held in Sarasota, Florida, USA. Team Canada had test matches against Team Scotland with both teams preparing for the 2014 Glasgow Commonwealth Games in Scotland. I remember playing my first international singles match that week against Scotland which I won. I didn’t get selected for Commonwealth Games 2014, but it’s been a goal of mine from before I made it onto the national team and a goal I hope to realize in April 2018. Only a few weeks after national team camp in Florida 2014 I was presented the opportunity to lawn bowl in China. In March 2014 I traveled from Vancouver to Hong Kong to compete in the HK Tiger Bowls World Invitational and then travelled to mainland China in the Hainan province where a team of eight Canadians competed in the China Open in the spring of 2014. The women’s team didn’t medal but it was an experience I still think upon fondly as I made lifelong friends from across the world and learnt from the losses.

It is thru the losses that I learn the most and after years and years of losing games and tournament after tournament, the lessons from those losses have payed off. With rigorous and consistent training, thru the help of sport mentors and coaches, thru experiencing countless tournaments and games home or away I have become a tenacious and hard working bowler. And I feel privileged to be on Team Canada for the fourth year in a row now and I look forward to my fifth year on the team. This next year, 2018, is a huge year for me in bowls in that I will be competing in the World Cup at Warilla and hopefully be selected to represent Canada at the 2018 World Youth Championships and most importantly realize my dream of playing for Canada in the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games all in Australia this coming Spring.

When I go to compete for Canada at the World Cup I will be representing our beautiful country and I will also be representing the province of British Columbia and my home clubs Tsawwassen Lawn Bowling Club as well as the Pacific Indoor Bowls Club. Shout out to those two clubs and the people and clubs that make up the Vancouver and District Lawn Bowls Association, Bowls British Columbia, and Bowls Canada for supporting me and making me into the bowler that I am today and the one I strive to be in the future.

It is the people we find along our path that help influence the road ahead. Thank you to all my coaches and influencers over the years. Thank you to my grandmother, Margaret Westlake, who was my first coach and mentor and who introduced me to the sport of lawn bowls and who has always been my biggest supporter in the early years of my sport development in bowls. Thank you to past Bowls Canada president and family friend, Ian Tyzzer, for your guidance and support over the years. Thank you to Stephen Forrest of Strobe Structured Sports who put two years in as my personal coach and attended my first World Youth Championships along with other major lawn bowling competitions.
Thank you to club members and friends who have served as mentors and leaders in the sport. Also thank you to those volunteers on the V&D board and past Bowls BC boards who have and continue to invest in and run junior programs that work. Mary Hargreaves has been a second grandmother to me and a big encourager of lawn bowls in my life, thank you “Nana Mary.” And of course a really big thank you to current national team coaches Terry Scott and Darryl Fitzgerald for being available for advice, and in competition overseas, as well as at training camps. All of these people have shaped who I am as a lawn bowler, their knowledge and experience has been invaluable.
Where will the money you donate go towards?
It will be a big help to have to not think about money when I am away competing for Canada in potentially three international competitions this Spring 2018. My flights may be covered for getting from Vancouver, Canada to Sydney, Australia for the World Cup in Warilla (Thank you Bowls Canada Boulingrin), however it will get more complicated financially if I am selected to play for Canada at the 2018 World Youth Championships as well as the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games. How so? Well the World Youth Championships is first, followed by the World Cup, which is followed by the Commonwealth Games.

What does this mean for me if I get selected to compete in the latter two events? Well it means that I will have to fund my own travel between the Gold Coast World Youth Championships down to Warilla for the World Cup and then back up the coast to compete in the Commonwealth Games. There are two to three weeks between the World Cup and Comm Games should I be selected to compete in them. I will have to either fly back to Canada during this time or I will find accomodations for myself during that two week gap between competitions. This I will need funding for. So in advance I thank you for your generous donation.
