My 17-year-old sister Dana, was diagnosed with a very rare and inoperable brain tumor known as DIPG in December 2017. She was 29 weeks pregnant when the doctors told her she has 3 months to live.

Before her diagnosis, Dana was like any other kid. She danced for over 13 years, played all kinds of sports like basketball, soccer, gymnastics, track & field, golf, and was always living life to the fullest.

She worked at a local golf course, playing as often as she could, but mainly to pay for classes at a local community college. She was 2 weeks away from taking her final exams and finishing her first semester. Until she began to walk funny.

After thinking it was due to her pregnancy for 2 weeks, her mother decided to bring her to the ER. What would be thought of as a normal checkup, turned into a complete nightmare.

Dana has since had a full round of radiation at CHOP in Philadelphia, which shrank the tumor a bit however, due to the aggressive nature of DIPG, she has a lot of difficulty walking on her own and has trouble speaking, swallowing, eating and breathing. Every day is a new challenge.

Currently, there is no cure for DIPG and has a less than 1% survival rate.

If you are not in a position to donate to help save my sister’s life, we ask that you please pray for her. All proceeds raised from this campaign will go directly towards Dana’s medical and treatment expenses. Thank you and God bless.

Hello all,

A recent post on Dana’s Facebook page and update on the status of her treatment and tumor.

————————————————————————

Long overdue post.

Over the last 3 weeks since treatment, Dana has been feeling similar to previous trips in that overall she feels normal, able to do most everything, but has been experiencing more symptoms we feel are treatment related.

Clinically, she looks great. She came to one of her benefits this past weekend with Aries and almost sang karaoke. However, every day she wakes up with headaches and vomiting, constant pain in her upper back, neck and lower back, a lack of appetite, and has been having spasms similar to the ones she was getting before.

Yesterday she went to see her local oncologist in Philly for an MRI. The results of the MRI weren’t what we were expecting. There appears to be minor progression on the right side of the tumor, but after more due diligence, it could also be inflammation or treatment related. They’re taking a closer look today with the team comparing it to her previous MRI. We should hear back today or tomorrow on their opinion on whether it’s the tumor or treatment related.

It’s these times that are the most difficult. The unknown of what we’re seeing and what to do if treatment is not effective. We ask that you please keep Dana in your prayers and ask for positive news from the doctors.

We’re currently in fundraising mode as we don’t have enough to be able to send Dana back to Mexico for treatment. If you’re feeling philanthropic, please consider Dana in your giving needs. Every penny counts.

As we learn more about the current status of Dana’s tumor, we will revisit which treatment is best moving forward. And we’ll share our thoughts, as all of you have been unbelievably supportive to Dana and our family from beginning. Thank you for always being there with love and prayers, and for helping Dana beat her initial prognosis of 3 months. We are forever grateful!

Finally a big thank you to Jess, Matt, Em, Jason, Braylon, DJ Spider, and to the community of Riverside and Danville! As well as Alurring Vapors, Dana’s sister Leann, and the many vendors a part of the Car and Clouds benefit on Sunday!

God bless!

Hi all,

It’s been a long time since I’ve updated in GoFundMe. We’ve been posting updates on Dana to her Facebook page Pray for Dana. Please follow her page for updates: https://m.facebook.com/prayfordana

For those who do not have Facebook, I’m sorry there hasn’t been activity here in a long time.

Over the past 2 months, Dana has been through 4 sessions of intra-arterial and intrathecal chemotherapy at the clinic down in Monterrey, Mexico. We’ve been extremely fortunate for the families and community in Mexico for the help they’ve given us on each trip, as the language barrier has been a big hurdle. But more so due to the unknowns of what to expect for Dana from the treatment.

In short, the treatment has been effective in shrinking the tumor. We’ve seen a shrinkage of at least 2mm since her first procedure and are awaiting the results from her latest treatment, from just 2 weeks ago. The next trip is scheduled for August 9th. The doctors plan is for Dana to receive treatment every 3 weeks to the day.

The reality is the treatment has been very harsh on Dana. She’s experienced sever illness, headaches, back pain, nausea, lack of appetite, and immediately following the procedure, she is in antagonizing pain mainly in her lower back and legs. We think this is in part due to her sciatica, but the intrathecal, which is administered via her spine through punctures in her back, is the main factor.

We have planned accordingly and have been able to budget for 5 treatments. Each treatment has been $11,000 plus tax. The first two treatments were done at Hospital Angeles in Neuvo Leon, Monterrey, Mexico, which charged $5,000 each time. We’ve since moved to another hospital, Alfa, that has been free of charge. Along with the treatment, the other costs have been flights, hotel, and food. GoFundMe also takes a portion of each donation.

All said and done, we have enough for 1 more treatment currently. We want to thank everyone for their donations, support, gifts, thoughtful messages, and prayers. We would not be here and more importantly, Dana would not be where she is today without the help from all of you. We will never be able to fully repay you but remain forever grateful for the generosity shown by each and every person.

There will be fundraising events in the coming month, both locally and online, for us to continue to raise funds. Please stay tuned to Dana’s Facebook page for info and updates.

If you’re able, we again are asking for your help. No matter what it is, we ask that you please consider continuing to help Dana. She is the strongest person we know and a mother to a beautiful and healthy baby. And it is our absolute goal for her to beat this and live a long, healthy and happy life.

Thank you

Hi all,

Over a month ago, we received the news of Dana’s diagnosis. Shortly thereafter, I started this campaign. Not knowing the costs of the necessary treatment, I set the goal at $10k. It’s hard to believe we’ve quadrupled that initial goal in just over 30 days!

It’s absolutely incredible and all because of you! You made the decision that my sister was worth saving and for that, my family and I will forever be indebted to you.

With every donation, we take one step closer to affording treatment. We are still considering all options, with a lean towards the clinic in Monterrey, Mexico. Many children are seeing positive results and after an application, Dana has been accepted. This is amazing news! However, we are just short of HALF of what it will cost, initially.

They’re recommending 4 rounds of chemo and immunotherapy, to start, which is about $30,000 per round. We’re continuing to set up fundraisers outside and through this campaign, but please keep sharing. I know you’ve given more than enough already by donating, but sharing brings more awareness to pediatric cancer. Children should not be given a death sentence with no options. They deserve more than 4% of government funding. Let’s help change that together!

Below is an update from Dana’s Facebook page Pray for Dana:

The last few days have been really good! Dana is continuing with radiation without many side effects, her hearing is very sensitive to different sounds but no headaches, thank the Lord! She’s also been very persistent in walking because she has a walker now, compliments of the hospital, and gets up to do most things on her own. There’s good and bad in that, but try telling Dana she can’t do something!

Aries is one of the healthiest babies in the nICU. She’s eating regularly, breathing great, and her vitals are all in check. God has his hand in all of this with a very watchful eye on them both. We’re hoping for some good news soon for them both!

I’ve been receiving a lot of requests of where to send Dana a card, etc. For now and the immediate future, you can send them to 3925 Chestnut Street, Room 36, Philadelphia, PA 19104. Please address to Dana Scatton.

If anyone is looking to help in ways other than donating or sending gifts, please help spread awareness for DIPG and pediatric cancer. Children deserve more than 4% and it’s through awareness that we can enact change!

On a final note, Dana wants everyone to know how thankful she is. She cannot thank you all enough! The amount of support she’s been receiving from messages, to gifts, to prayers, to total strangers wanting to help, she’s over the moon with joy! And it’s all thanks to all of YOU. So take time today, tomorrow, whenever, to feel proud of sending the gift of encouragement, faith, and hope to my sister and Aries!

Apologies for the lack of updates. Dana has been quite busy the last few days. She’s back in radiation and says it’s a lot better now because she doesn’t have to worry about Aries. She’s the only person I know that would say, radiation is a lot better now. She’s so positive, it’s amazing.

She’s been having a bit of trouble sleeping lately though. It’s uncomfortable and difficult to catch sleep at night, but we’re praying God can give her the peace she needs to overcome this. Her symptoms are stable with no progress or regression since Sunday, but that’s expected as she continues with radiation.

Dana hasn’t had any fear lately and she contributes that to God. There is so much unknown when battling DIPG but she says God is constantly showing her his purpose for her and that gives her calmness. She’s had some anxiety at times but then prays and it goes away. God has been so instrumental for her throughout this whole process. Her faith grows stronger with each passing day.

On the 8th floor news front, Aries has been doing great. Mainly due to having her mommy whenever she needs, but she’s breast feeding every day and doing really well.

The love and support Dana and Aries have been receiving is incredible. You’re all such wonderful people and I can’t thank you enough for all that you’ve done and continue to do!

I’ll post some picture updates later today. Until then, God bless!
