Get us to the Invention Convention!

Portage Park School is proud to announce that they will be sending five 4th grade students to the National Invention Convention and Entrepreneurship Exposition taking place in Washington D.C. May 19th- 21st  to compete against students from all over the country.

These 5 girls identified a variety of common problems, then developed solutions for them. They first competed against 97 other 4th graders in our school based competition. Winners were chosen from our school based competition to go on to the Chicago (city-wide) Student Invention Convention. Our 5 girls swept the 4th grade group taking 1st, 2nd, and 3rd place, and Honorable Mention beating out students from other schools around the city. Natalie Correa placed 1st with her Hands Free Umbrella. Charlotte Hastings placed 2nd with her Boot Dryer. Victoria Quiroga placed 3rd with her Pillow Prop-er. We also had Emily Curiel and Anahi Mendoza receive Honorable Mention which also qualified them to go to the national competition.

This is an exciting opportunity for these girls. However, we cannot brighten their futures without your help. The cost for each girl to attend the competition is $1100 which includes the cost of the flight, hotel, and food. The school cannot incur the costs to send them as Chicago Public Schools is having a budget crisis.

Without funding, these girls will miss out on an experience that will empower them as learners, instill confidence, and teach them life-long critical problem-solving skills that will help them to succeed in America’s future workforce. Charlotte comes from a large family of 4 kids with another on the way. Both Emily and Anahi are daughters of immigrants. All 5 of these girls are honor roll students. We need to support these young women who are interested in future careers in engineering, technology, and entrepreneurship. The first step is getting them to the competition.

We have set a goal to raise $9000 by May 1st.
$1100 (hotel, food, flight) + $700 (cost for a parent to accompany them) x 5 (competitors) = $9000

We appreciate any amount you can give. Thank you so much for investing in our future!

About the Inventors

Natalie Correa
Natalie’s invention Hands Free Umbrella won her first place among 4th graders at the Chicago Invention Convention. The idea for her invention came to her while walking her dog on a rainy day. Natalie was having difficulty holding her backpack and other school items as her dog tried to pull her along on their walk. Natalie realized she couldn’t hold all those things. She says she also got the idea from watching her mom who always got soaked while trying to walk with her twin sister and brother in the rain. Natalie loves reading, playing volleyball, and spending time with her dog.

Charlotte Hastings
Charlotte placed 2nd among 4th graders at the Chicago Invention Convention with her Boot Dryer. Charlotte says she came up with her invention when she wanted to solve a problem for her mom - muddy boots in the house. Charlotte has seen many messes made by her little brothers. Her favorite subjects are history, reading, and writing. Charlotte keeps herself busy with baseball, running (a former participant of Girls on the Run), arts and crafts, and sewing.

Victoria Quiroga
Victoria placed 3rd among the 4th graders at the Chicago Invention Convention with her Pillow Prop-er. The idea came to her as she was laying down and noticed she was having trouble breathing, as she knows many people do, especially people with asthma, acid reflux, or other congestion issues. She then realized that it would be great if there could be something that could prop your pillows up instead of having to do it yourself. She recently appeared on WGN Morning News as their Friday Forecaster. Victoria also enjoys dancing when she’s not doing crazy math problems.

Emily Curiel & Anahi Mendoza
Emily and Anahi received Honorable Mention at the Chicago Invention Convention with their invention the Miss Buttery Stick. Emily came up with idea because both her parents work at restaurants that serve breakfast. Emily didn’t want her parents struggling to put butter on pancakes or waffles anymore so she came up with a butter stick. Besides inventing, Emily enjoys reading, playing the piano, and collecting Shopkins. Anahi enjoys gymnastics and dance.
