Portland Community Rowing Rebuild

$28,175 of $25,000 goal

Raised by 136 people in 4 months
Created July 10, 2018
A down-burst with over 60mph winds hit our boatyard Tuesday, July 10th. We lost over $100,000 of thousands of dollars in boats, and the ability to hold clinics and get more people excited about rowing in Portland. The financial loss is huge, but emotionally this is a crew that was just starting to take off. PCRA was started in 2009 and is a non-profit 501c3 organization. If you would rather donate by check, please contact us at row@rowportland.org.

This is devastating to our team and its founders. This will not be the end of our program. We will not let this disaster stop us from pursuing the sport we love. Please help us by donating, every bit counts.

WMTW 8 Maine News , WGME 13 Maine News , News Center Maine and The Portland Press Herald  all reported on the incident.

Wow, with your help Portland Community Rowing Association has made a lot of progress! In a little over one month, 129 people have brought us very close to our goal with just $1,425 to go. Amazing! The new racks are in place and four, new-to-us boats have been purchased. Volunteers have worked hard this summer. And with the support of Waynflete and Portland Yacht Services PCRA only had to cancel one day due to the storm. One Day! From so many of our members and Learn-To-Row participants this year - thank you, thank you, thank you!

Thanks again for all the donations we have received so far! It is truly amazing to see the kindness and impossible to explain feeling the comfort that all of you have brought to us at PCRA. SE Main Bear has shared a time-lapse video of the storm on YouTube and I thought I'd share it with all of you. This was the storm that did the irreparable damage to our boats and emotions.

Here is your day two update on our progress. We have a temporary rack with the use of our trailer. We are waiting for the insurance adjuster. Once we have confirmation that it is ok to dispose of what remains of the shells, we will do so. We have salvaged what we can for later use on second hand boats that we plan to acquire.

Thankfully, we do have insurance, however it most likely will not cover all recovery costs. For example we just never thought that our rack that stood for almost 10 years would ever be lifted, dragged, and twisted into splinters. We are hearing from individuals and organizations with offers of loaner boats, retired boats, monetary donations, time and talent donations. We welcome them all, no donation is too small to matter. Just hearing the well wishes is having a great impact on every PCRA member.

Thank you for all of your donations!
