On November 8th, 2018 my cousin, Alma Poindexter Dawson Chaika, lost everything in the devastating fire that swept through Paradise, CA.  Her home is gone, her job is gone, her personal belongings are gone.  Her family photos are gone.  Her material and financial life are gone.  In an instant, my cousin Alma and my Aunt Dolly have nothing, but the clothes on their backs.  It takes my breath away to even think about this.  None of us ever expects this to happen to them, it never will, we have insurance, we will be okay……they are not okay.  My cousin Alma takes complete care of my Aunt Dolly, who is bed ridden.  The cost to do so has not afforded my cousin Alma to pay for homeowner’s insurance.  It happens, we all do things to cut corners to try to save a few bucks.  I can raise my hand to say I have done the same. Then something happens……….a devastating fire.

My family lost everything during Hurricane Sandy.  I know how hard it is to clean up, get up and move forward the best you can.  It is easy to say, hey we are still alive and I have my family, but the reality of not even having a home to go to is heart breaking.  That scarf your mom made is not there.  The only picture you had of your parents wedding is not there.  Your family bible is not there……

The emotionally roller coaster of being thankful to be alive and then realize you have nothing, then you are sharing a place with other people without your belongings is beyond my ability to express here.

My cousin Alma was my bestie when we were kids.  We were the two that got into trouble together.  We would hide my grandmothers rent checks or slide down Aunt Dolly’s stairs on our butts……silly kids we were.  Your mind goes back to these great times to try to help you heal along the path of recovery.  Some days it works and some days it does not.  A great loss is something no one ever expects will happen to them or their family.

Alma’s employer has paid for a hotel room, temporarily.  It is a start. Sadly, Alma’s employer lost their company building in the fires.  We all need a helping hand at times in our lives.  This is that time for my cousin Alma and my Aunt Dolly…….please, donate. Every little bit helps.

Thank you for all the well wishes and love from our home to your home.  God bless.

Sadly.....the picture on the left is what is left of my cousin and aunts home......nothing. I can't imagine driving up the road and your head lights do not show a home. I am sure they cried, were thankful to be alive, and devastated. Personally, I might have thrown up. The photo on the right is from the local Home Depot in Chico. I sent this for Alma and she said her son picked up two of them. My feet would feel like lead going back and having to sift through the ashes to find anything.....anything.......sad times, hugs.

Let me start off by saying I am overwhelmed by everyone's love, kindness and generosity, it has truly humbled me to know we are so loved and supported. Thank you doesn't begin to cover our gratitude to all of you!
Here is an update on our situation one week out. My friends, Steve and Karen Emmons have graciously opened their home to me, mom and our 2 dogs for as long as we need a place to stay. It is quiet and peaceful place for healing and recovery for both mom and I. As for work, Atria Senior Living has been wonderful and supportive through all of this. They are hoping to relocate all the employee's that want to continue to work for Atria. I'm not sure how relocating will work for mom and I, I am trying to keep my mind and heart open to what the Lord has planed for us. I have much peace in knowing my Lord has this all worked out. He knows the plans he has for me, plans to lift me up and to prosper me, not to harm me. So I am resting in his care.
Thank you again, it sounds so small, but I am ever so grateful for each one of you, and your generosity. I am asking God to bless each one of you.
Love and Blessings to all of you!

My cousin Alma and Aunt Dolly are temporarily staying with friends, thankfully. Aunt Dolly is doing much better at the friends home and my cousin Alma has internet to start getting their lives moving forward. I think we all forget how little things like internet are always available and then one day they are not.........again, I cannot say it enough how you walk out your door one day never realizing that you left that morning with everything you have and nothing more. Thank you so much everyone for your support!! Please, continue to share!!! Happy Thanksgiving!!
