Pocket Park for Warrendale

$18,053 of $25,000 goal

Raised by 72 people in 26 months
Almost  4 years  ago  my husband Joe and I started the In Memory of Community Garden to help the Warrendale Community (located at Minock and Whitlock),bringing neighbors of all cultures and ages together. The garden currently has 40 raised beds, a butterfly garden in the shape of a butterfly, compost tumblers , rain barrels, community information center and ,little library . We have had GREAT support from State Reps, Detroit City Council, District Managers , The Detroit Police Dept, , The Warrendale Community Organization along with many Organizations in the City of Detroit. Lawrence Technological University is also assisting with the design. We  added a Solar greenhouse in Nov.2018 and we continue to work on the landscaping.
In Jan of 2017 we won the Project Evergreen Contest where we have received the renovation of a safe green space for children and families but this does not include any play equipment. We won a grant from KaBoom offering part of the cost of the playscape but we have to come up with $25000.00 in order to receive a $15000.00 credit.  We have already personally purchased the lots but are in need of help to raise the additional funds. Adding a pocket park to our community space is much needed with the closest park from the   garden being about a mile away. Even though the garden welcomes the youth , we all know children get bored very easily. The pocket park will allow parents, grandparents to still volunteer at the garden and keep an eye on the children across the street. With so many abandoned houses/lots in the Warrendale area and nowhere for the children to play we have seen many children throughout the years playing in and around these abandoned houses. #helpthechildren #warrendale #inmemoryofcommunitygarden #children #community #park #pocketpark #detroit #gofundme #neighborhood #warrendalecommunityorganization #kids #playground #play #safety #blockclubs #district7 #dist7
Please help The In Memory of Community Garden and the Warrendale Community Organization  (both organizations are a 501c3-non profit so all of your donations are tax deductible ) to create a   safe, clean  park in the Warrendale Community for our children. We are so excited!! We met with Cindy from Project Evergreen and the contractor who will be removing the stumps, leveling off the space and planting the seed. He is also donating the boulders to secure the park....HORRAY!!!!! I thought I was going to cry when he said he would donate the boulders, my voice went up a few octaves and all I could say was REALLY!!! We will be having a community day for this part of the project to help with measuring off for the boulder placement, maybe some seeding or putting in the rain garden. For the past 2 years I have just had a dream of what the park would look like, today is the first time it felt real. We were told that this part should be completed at the latest Memorial Day. I would like to set up the build day for the play equipment the Thursday,Friday and Saturday after it is completed . As we get closer I will know more about how many days we will need. I will add pictures of the playscape and swings. The Log hop is going to depend on additional donations/funding as they are $419 each log. Thank You all for supporting us during this crazy ride we have been on trying to get that house demolished and getting things set up.

Thank you so much Panela Tokarz and Barb Woodrow for the donations. We will be breaking ground on the park in the spring and this will surely help.

We need boulders so we can surround the park like the City of Detroit is doing with all the city parks. If you happen to know of anyone willing to donate some boulders it would be greatly appreciated. a couple of years ago we were told by the county that they could not help us as long as we personally owned the lots but if we gave them back to the City of Detroit they could help. I recently asked the City of Detroit for help and they told me the same thing...When I apply for grants we have to own the lots in order to get grants and grants are very hard to get here in Detroit because there are so many applying. We are just going to do what we can and add to the park as we receive more donations. This is a lot of work but the children are worth it. THINK SPRING ;)
