Pocket Park for Warrendale

$2,310 of $10k goal

Barb Matney  DETROIT, MI
A year ago  my husband Joe and I started the In Memory of Community Garden to help the Warrendale Community (located at Minock and Whitlock),bringing neighbors of all cultures and ages together. The garden currently has 12 raised beds, a butterfly garden in the shape of a butterfly, compost tumblers and rain barrels. We have had GREAT support from State Reps, Detroit City Council, District Magnagers , The Detroit Police Dept, , The Warrendale Community Organization along with many Organizations in the City of Detroit. Lawrence Technological University is also assisting with the design.
We have recently won the Project Evergreen Contest where we have won the renovation of a safe green space for children and families but this does not include any play equipment. There is a grant available offering part of the cost of the playscape but we have to come up with around $10,000. to cover the balance.  We have already personally purchased the lots but are in need of help to raise the additional funds. Adding a pocket park to our current community space is much needed with the closest park from the   garden being about a mile away. Even though the garden welcomes the youth as we all know children get bored very easily. The pocket park will allow parents, grandparents to still volunteer at the garden and keep an eye on the children across the street. With so many abandoned houses/lots in the Warrendale area and no where for the children to play we have seen many children throughout the years playing in and around these abandoned houses. Please help The In Memory of Community Garden and the Warrendale Community Organization  (both organizations are a 501c3-non profit) to create a  clean, safe  pocket park in the Warrendale Community for our children. If you prefer to donate by mail the address is

We received great news today we have won the KaBoom Grant. Now the pressure is on we really need to raise at least $10,000 in order to get the grant. Every dollar and sharing the link counts. Please share the link ;)
Dear Barb,
Congratulations! We are jumping for joy to award the In Memory of Community Garden with a Let’s Play Construction Grant in the amount of $15,000 from Dr Pepper Snapple Group and KaBOOM!. Let’s Play is a community partnership led by Dr Pepper Snapple (DPS) to help kids and families get active. KaBOOM! is proud to be a part of the Let’s Play partnership, and are thrilled to help you impact even more children. We thank you for working to provide quality, fun, and safe outdoor play opportunities for the children in your community.

We received a call from KaBoom yesterday requesting more information. The pressure is on to hit our goal. I talked to the playscape vendors whom KaBoom works with I underestimated the amount we need by about $8000. Wow I didn't realize this Pocket Park was going to cost so much. Plus KaBoom wants me to raise the amount of liability insurance to at least a million per occurrence.....Stressing...
