Nigel is a 15 year old boy, who just recently made try outs for his swim team! With great passion for this sport of swimming, Nigel was waking up early before school every morning to condition and prepare himself for his very first swimming invitational on December 19, 2015. He walked into swim practice Friday December 18th, and that is when and where this horrific accident took place. Nigel and the team were getting ready for practice and he slipped and dove into the pool head first. He was knocked unconscious and his coach had to pull him from the pool and perform CPR. Thank you Our Lord and Savior for the coach that saved Nigels life and bringing Nigel back to us!! Unfortunately, Nigel sustained fractures of C5 and C6 vertebrae. This injury currently has affected him in such a way that he has no fine motor movements of his upper extremities and no movement of his lower extremities. To complicate things more, he developed a severe case of pneumonia which is being treated with antibiotics, aggressive breathing treatments and cough assist. On December 21st, Nigel was put into a Halo for the cervical fractures. He remains in the ICU. Nigel is remaining very positive through all of this and has even requested to try to get into a chair today! I talked with his Aunt Lacey this morning and she said to me... "this kid is truly my hero!"
All that being said, we all can only imagine what stress Jessica and Nigel are going through right now. Let's all show them as much support as we can and lessen the burden of medical expenses, time off of work, equipment and whatever else may be needed for Nigel! If a monetary contribution is not possible, prayers are free and they will take as many of those as they can get!!! And I'm sure Nigel would enjoy reading and hearing about everyone rooting for him!! We all need to be full of positive thoughts, prayers and faith for a complete recovery!!!

Thank you all so much for your support!! I wanted to give you an update on Nigel. After his surgery yesterday, he was able to eat more than he has been able to, and he slept much better last night (likely due to breathing easier)! He is still in ICU and the pneumonia is still a major concern. He is still needing cough assist. We are hoping that the X- rays will show that he has less fluid in his lungs. No new news on the paralysis. He is liking all the positive feedback from so many of you! We are overwhelmed with gratitude for all of your donations, prayers, and positive thoughts!!! Merry Christmas!! #NigelStrong

Hello all : Thank you for all of your continued support and prayers. Nigel has his first week down in a rehabilitation hospital in Denver. This past week he has worked with many therapists , learning to feed himself again, put in his first temporary wheelchair ( not the one we're going home with) , passed his speech tests with flying colors so no present brain injuries at this time are evident. And I have passed all my tests for Spinal Cord Injury ( SCI) as a parent thus far and received our on campus pass so we can leave the floor. Tomorrow please keep us in your prayers as Nigel will undergo surgery to fuse his spine and take pressure off his spinal cord. I'll try to give an update soon. Thank you! Jessi ( mom)

Nigel and Jessica should be arriving in Denver any minute now, where they will be transported to a Rehab facility for at least the next 12 weeks. It is one of only 4 in the US that specialize in his type of injuries. Thank you all for your continued support!!

Good luck Buddy ! Don't give up and know there are so many people who believe in you! I read your story tonight and something about you stood out to me. Someone close to me was injured in a diving accident and I've read numerous stories and articles about many people involved in similar accidentsituation, but something about you stood out to me above and over anyone else I read about. I don't know how to explain it, but I see something special in you. I see a unique spirit in you. You're going to continue do great things in life!! Stay strong, you can do this!!

I'm Carolyn Ellis's sister-in-law and she's told me about all you've been through and what you need. I know this isn't much, but I hope it helps. Best of luck to you!
