Dear Friends,

This couple needs our help! The Friedmans are a Charedi couple living in Rishon Letzion who have brought up a beautiful family of children and grandchildren in the traditions of our community. This beautiful family is now in danger of losing their home due to financial difficulty.

The problem began with the wedding of their first child. In following community standards and protocols, the Friedmans promised high rates of support for the new couple, securing their promise with interest free loans from the local hachnosas Kallah G’mach program. As it turns out, while using these loans is a popular way to finance marriage obligations, not all couples are able to repay these loans when child after child gets married and the loans repayment schedule becomes bloated and onerous.

Both Mr. and Mrs. Friedman held full-time jobs and they did well. They practiced Chessed with their money by helping to support families in need. Mrs. Friedman taught kallahs in need the rules of Jewish marriage in her spare time. BUT with child after child getting married and the realities of marriage promises in the 1990s, the couple now had to focus on paying their own bills so their children could grow healthy in their new marriages. Even so the obligations were too much for the Friedmans to handle.

Being the responsible man that he is and taking into consideration his real budget based on current and expected future earnings, Mr. Friedman continued to defer payment of the marriage loans by taking out loans from the bank to cover the payments that were currently too high for the family to handle. He had to do this to protect his guarantors and co-signers, close family and friends, from becoming responsible for his children’s marriages. This led to debt buildup which the family now is not able to shoulder.

Bankruptcy law in Israel does not protect the primary residence from creditors. Mr. Friedman is now a grandfather in danger of losing his home, which the family has lived in for over 30 years! Mr. Friedman is too old to try his hand in homelessness. Mrs. Friedman is so emotionally distraught from the situation that she is losing her ability to function in her regular way.

This is a couple that worked and contributed to the community their whole lives. Now as grandparents who should be retiring they find themselves straddled with debt and struggling to keep their home.

This family deserves our help!
