Help me save my father from CANCER

Donation protected
My name is Raluca Marin.

I’ve created this page from the desire to help my parents in their fight with a diagnostic which arouses in everyone a feeling of horror - CANCER

My father was diagnosed with prostate cancer in January 2011

When you get a confirmation of a diagnosis like this, you are taken by surprise you don’t know in which direction to start, You want to find as soon as possible the best  solution in order to solve this illness/malady

In fact, you don’t know how your lifestyle will change your life from that moment on.

Over the course of a year, after following medical interventions, the PSA level was climbing what meant a red flag for all of us.

The first specialist, who saw him, was an urologist in Bucharest / Romania, who initially said it was not cancer but just a prostatitis.

Subsequently, following a series of investigations in Strasbourg, France was diagnosed with ProNeoplasm of the Prostate (poorly differentiated adenocarcinoma).

A few weeks later at another clinic in Strasbourg, the conclusion of the Department of Pathology report issued on April 8, 2011 at the Strasbourg University Clinic following surgery was,

-adenocarcinoma with low obliquely infiltrating prostatic prosthesis, with right and left seminal vesicles and left-sided left ventricular tissue, pT3bN0M0, Gleason 8 (4 + 4). Healing rates are from zero to 30%, but his life may be extended from 10 to 15 years with a proper treatment.

Without therapy, all physicians in the medical commission agreed that the chance of survival would be between 12 and 18 months - this may be aggressive prostate cancer. It all depends on the aggression of the biopsy Gleason score, which at my father is limited to maximum aggression (Gleason 8 (4 + 4).

Like any trained person, my parents tried to get a second opinion in the country, so they turned to the services of a private clinic. The professional experience of all is bigger or smaller and is case-specific

Unfortunately for my father, in the medical system in Romania, asking for a second opinion leads to a series of frustrations in the medical staff and instead of completing the experience of two or more doctors, he reach only doors closed.

The bad part is that the world is too little informed and from of our experience with other people, who meanwhile - unfortunately, some even young people have died out - we have come to the conclusion that family doctors, specialists in other areas than the oncological one should strengthen, strengthen their oncological knowledge so that they can recognize the signs of a possible oncological disorder and proceed to specialized control.

We try to morally support our parents, we met such doctors who communicate brutally, either alone to the family or directly to the patient, which is the worst. At the same time, the patient should not hide his illness if this communication can be done with special delicacy. Obviously, depending on the level of education, the patient can deduce the nature of the disease. It is important for a patient to know because, being informed, he can fight with his illness, for his health. It is essential to think that you can heal yourself.

As a consequence of this behavior, I did not believe it, and we have come to contact the clinic again in France. Happily or fortunately for us, we met along this difficult road first of all a HUMAN, after which we can tell a doctor, a real professional, a friend, who cares about my father's fate, which we owe him all the time gratitude for every moment spent together with my father.

This wonderful man is a Romanian doctor, physician Marius Pop, who is practicing at the Oncology Clinic in Strasbourg, the only one who has taken over my father's case, which eventually says he has made the ambition to keep him alive.

The recommendation of the oncologist Pop and the medical committee meeting at Paul Strauss Hospital was radical prostatectomy (prostate removal) using the da Vinci robotic surgery system. But even if this surgeon informed us that the cancer did not spread beyond the prostate, the PSA level has never become undetectable.

Over the next few months, PSA levels continued to rise from 0.2 to 0.4 to 0.8. We were told that this monthly doubling indicated that cancer was still present.

On 03.06.2011 following post-operative control at Paul Strauss Center - Regional Cancer Center,  the clinic in France , Professor Georges Noel  Head of Radiotherapy Department certified that my father's state of health requires starting Emergency treatment of adjuvant radiotherapy on the prostate depot using the IMRT (RCMI) technique, with the latest generation NOVALIS TX.

Later, this was confirmed by the Tomography Committee also in the Paul Strauss Clinic, Strasbourg on 09.06.2011 and by the oncology commission in Bucharest / Romania. Taking into account the fast evolution of the disease as well as the high cost of this type of treatment, we tried to find solutions to make the procedure in Romania. But with this occasion, we find out that this is not possible.

The oncologist told us that the best thing for my father it would be to urgently start a radiotherapy type IMRT because the low PSA score only indicated a minimal presence of cancer that would be difficult to locate. At that time in 2011, this type of irradiation did not exist in Romania, which is why we had to use all the services of the Paul Strauss clinic in Strasbourg. The cost of the treatment was very high, my parents tried to access the treatment financing option through the Romanian National Insurance House, (E112 form) a form, with international validity.

Because the financial situation at that time did not allow us to tolerate this type of treatment, my parents had to make huge efforts to cover these costs - the estimated treatment of 15,944.36 euros, plus the cost of accommodation / meals , transportation for 2 and a half months - 4000 euro,

-2500 euro unexpected costs (MRI, bone scintigraphy, increase of the number of sessions as a result of the analyzes carried out as a result of the treatment)

-Total amount of 22444,36 euro

Radiotherapy treatment was doubled by hormone therapy. So it started an agony through which we had to go, my father first, then my mother, me and my sister. We are just ordinary people - simple and normal (if there is such a thing) who want to live together, I wish with all my heart to see a smile on my father's face and the brilliance of the eyes of my mother and my sister

It is hard to believe how doctors who, before practicing, take an oath by committing themselves to do their best to help any person in distress, get to deny you, why not,  to deny the right to life, because in the situation of a sick man, refusing access to any kind of treatment, is nothing more than a death sentence.

During this time my mother was nearby my father. He needed her to be there for him as much as we needed them to be near us. She encouraged him to take walks to help alleviate fatigue and not to get stuck in bed doing nothing, which could have led him in a depressed state. She tried to keep him motivated to be active, which he did well. And at the same time, he learned to balance this motivation, also allowing him to rest because the irradiation tired of his body.

Year by year, my mother struggled with my father's illness, struggled with the medical system in Romania to be able to access treatments that could save him or prolong his life.

As a caretaker, it is important to remember that anything that happens to the loved one, while going through cancer treatment is not personal.

That was my mom for my Dad.

She continued to support him. When someone does not feel comfortable with himself, often the person needs to be quiet about the love of others.

I need your help through this site to raise funds to offer a new treatment for my father, a treatment that can extend his life, because I find it unjust and premature to leave now among us

In order to benefit from this reimbursement in 2011, a medical file was drawn up, which was endorsed by the Oncology Commission of the Fundeni Clinical Hospital, the Oncological Institute Alexandru Trestioreanu, a state hospital.

Unfortunately, the response received by us from the National Insurance House was not the one we wanted, the CASMB institute rejecting our request for funding on the grounds that they cannot reimburse non-domestic treatments that are not in the basic package of the insured person, motivating that we also have the right to access the National Treatment Program abroad for therapies not found in the country within the Ministry of Health.

Like any good-faith citizen, a simple person, mom, restored the documentation required by the terms of this program to obtain funding from the Ministry of Health.

Another dossier, other papers, in a time when cancer spread with a rapidity endangering my father's life.

Although in the second dossier, the diagnosis was certified, moreover, my father's state of health and included in the "MEDICAL EMERGENCY" category, because this therapy should be done in a period of 3 to 7 months, from the date of surgery and the results of the tests confirm the rapid evolution of the disease, and with all above mentioned, the file was for the second time rejected because theoretical this treatment can be accessed in Romania.

Following the response received from the Ministry of Health, Mom submitted a memo to which she attached a letter from the only clinic that was supposed to have performed this procedure (Private Clinic in Romania, GRAAL MEDICAL / ONCOFORT) in Romania, we have been officially confirmed that for the moment radiotherapy using the IMRT technique is not implemented within the clinic.

As a companion of a person diagnosed with cancer, my mother had to demonstrate to the Romanian authorities that that type of treatment recommended to my father cannot be performed in Romania.

The answer from the Ministry of Health was, despite the severity of health, and the attesting documents, also negative, this being the reason why I hope to find support in those who read this letter. As if the diagnosis itself does not overwhelm you enough, there has also been a struggle with the medical system in which you are walking from one institution to another, even if you are encouraged all over to apply for treatment programs abroad.

As I mentioned above, despite the medical emergency confirmed in two different countries, despite the correct documents drafted by the authorities and medical institutions, it was a definite refusal to grant the necessary treatment, implicitly a denial of my father's right to live. Everywhere we were, and we are being watched by the rapid evolution of the disease, by the fact that in the medical records it is always mentioned the mention of MEDICAL EMERGENSY and yet in 2017 the doors of medical practices in Romania are permanently closed.

IMRT procedure was not available in Romania, there was the confirmation of the medical emergency in my father's case, there is the E112 form theoretically for accessing treatment returns abroad, and yet no one approves anything.

Perhaps we would not have come to this situation, to bag mercy, and a little bit of help, but because trouble never comes alone, we are now in a moment of life in which life's attempts come one after the other....

In November 2016, my father's illness resumed again, requiring treatment at the clinic in France where he had his medical history, with funding refused by the medical system in Romania on Feb. 24, 2017 my grandfather suffered more brain strokes,  after which he remained immobile in bed, on March 31, 2017, my younger sister suffered from severe family-related medical conditions, a severe depression, and she also needed costly and permanent follow-up treatments, and now, no year after the last relapse of illness , the cancer in my father's body returned to strength.

After 6 years in which the disease has relapsed 4 times, we have come to face a new relapse, where the only option is, once again, the radiotherapy treatment in Strasbourg, France, where a series of procedures that helped my father to live those 6 years from the time of the disease, where he was registered, and the procedural history of the therapist.

A NEW MEDICAL EMERGENCY, a new rampant disease development that can be stopped by your help and doctors in Strasbourg.

I have desperate needs from you, , because sincerely you are our only hope we still have. It is painful to know that somewhere in the world there is a chance to live for everyone and yet for financial reasons you cannot access that one chance, of those treatments.

The support received by my father was from the family first and from the doctors in the clinic in France, who through their experience, understood the impact that this diagnosis can have on him and they wanted to help him to live.

Unfortunately, prostate cancer has progressed recently and, during hormone therapy. There are many new treatments available for patients with advanced prostate cancer, offering men many options and many hopes for the future.

From the deep of my heart Please …..Please Help Us to be helped, to be able to access these vital treatments for my father

We are two sisters who desperately want to have him together at the most important events in our lives. He is a wonderful man who has done only well around him, who helped unconditionally whenever he had the opportunity to do it, and whom we do not want him to leave before the weather. Cancer is a reality for us now, but we're trying to make sure it's just a small part of our lives.

As we well known, Cancer is a disease that does not just affect the patient itself; it is a disease of the whole family. Cancer does not unfortunately cure, , but you should be aware that the more you go to the doctor and follow the recommended treatments; there is the chance of keeping it under control. In essence, it is our wish, my own, my mother and my sister, that my father can still benefit from a treatment, which unfortunately in Romania does not currently exist, treatment that can help him to prolonged life.

After the investigations, biopsy, surgery, and radiation therapy in Strasbourg in 2011, I was hoping for a long time that we managed to keep this illness in place, but the disease returned again in 2013 (metastatic relapse ganglionic). The medical recommendation was to perform IMRT type radiotherapy again, this time in 3 sessions of maximum intensity (30 gray / sessions, versus 2 gray / sitting as standard).

Again after many steps taken in clinics, we have come to realize that this procedure is not practicable in Romania, which meant keeping the treatment costs from own income.

The cost of the treatment was 6300 euros (Pet CT Scan with Choline + IMRT) to which were added the transport and accommodation costs each time.

Having relapses again is worse. You realize you're susceptible to recover, but every sign or pain becomes a fear, a concern. We were afraid he might die for that one day. I will never understand why a man can be denied from the right to live just because he dared to access the treatments done in another country, only because his desiring to live  is desperately.

My mother told me with tears in her eyes that she was just being taken out of a medical office of oncology, because that doctor was upset when she heard that my father had been treated in another country. Then, how she tried from the clinic to clinic to talk to doctors specializing in this area, and how she has to face only closed doors.

A real agony in terms of timing was that year, a great deal of humiliation, again financial efforts to manage father to radiation therapy at the clinic in Strasbourg, the cost of this therapy being about 10,000 euros in that the investigation PET CT Scan with Choline, which is not currently performed in Romania. There have been months of sacrifice, emotional load at very high rates.

The joy that my father resisted the aggressiveness of the treatment he held until the fall of 2015 when he was discovered with 12 carcinogenic lymphadenopathy on the lymph nodes on a 74 cm area. I do not think I can find the right words to describe the shock / panic that we all passed at that time.

You probably imagine that the oncologist of the hospital in Bucharest was willing to support my father? Well ... NO!

The aggressive progression of cancer within a few weeks, the fear of losing him, has led us to call again Marius Pop, the oncologist in Strasbourg, who has always managed his disease to find a personalized treatment set for my father's cancer typology.

The procedures performed were the same PET CT SCAN with CHOLIN, plus a new generation of Thomo Therapy and IMRT in 3 sessions with the same intensity of 30 grays per session.

Only the cost of the therapies amounted to 16,000 euros and the cost of transportation and accommodation was added. Already at this point, considering the aggressive form of this type of cancer, in the clinics in Bucharest (Romania), where my mother addressed in the hope of finally finding a medical help, my father's case did not want to either taken over by a physician on the principle that it is too difficult. And then we positively questioned what we have to do? Are we letting him die? NO WAY.

We followed the directions of the Strasbourg Oncologist and my parents went to France so that my father could benefit from the indicated treatment. One year after the end of this treatment, in 2016 a new recurrence of the lymph node occurred, and because, as I said above, the only one willing to take over my father's case is the oncologist in France, we passed the results of the investigations (PSA / MRI) awaiting therapeutic indications. A new indication of maximum dose (30 gray) IMRT radiotherapy in 3 sessions along with hormone therapy was the solution proposed by the oncologist.

Now, in September 2017, we are facing a new lymph node relapse for which we desperately need financial support. We desperately need your help in order to support us to give my father a chance to live. The estimated cost of treatment is 28,000 euros, including medical assessments, procedures, treatment, and accommodation in Strasbourg. The recommended treatment is a newer generation that has not yet arrived in Romania but can prolong my father's life for at least another year, which is extremely important to us.

Taking into account the above-mentioned aspects, the disease is advancing very fast and the only chance of surviving is to treat him abroad, as well as the fact that doctors there are willing to save life’s without taking into account the age of the patient, the social status, the age, we want to find the resources needed to fund this procedure in order to start the treatment, to have that chance for everyone who has the right to live, but which my father, was systematically refused in our country.

I wrote these lines with many hopes and I want to thank everyone who will give us a helping hand.

I am attaching the documents that testify to the truth of what I have described above.

Thank you ….all of you from the deep of my heart
