A tribute to a 13-year old girl הלל

On June 30, 2016, Hallel Ariel, a beautiful 13-year old girl was stabbed to death as she lay sleeping peacefully in her bed.

Hallel was murdered on the night before her summer break. She had just finished the school year. That evening, just a few short hours before she was brutally murdered, she performed on stage in an incredibly moving dance recital which was an accumulation of years of hard work and practice.

Hallel was a genuinely kind girl, the type of child who put other people's interests before her own.  She loved to read, enjoyed expressing herself through dance, enjoyed nature (especially helping her father in his vineyard), and was loved by her many peers. Hallel’s tragic murder came as an unspeakable shock to her family, friends, community and the entire world.

Hallel’s parents wondered how they could perpetuate their daughter’s memory in a meaningful way.  Rena Ariel, Hallel’s mother, (together with her sister, Tzipora Piltz) decided to author a book, Pirkei Hallel. It is one of the only books ever written with material to help a bat mitzvah girl prepare for her beautiful milestone.

The book is separated into 12 chapters (each stand-alone for whoever wants to read one or two chapters or perhaps skip around) and the book is designed to serve as a guide for both parent and child on their journey to prepare for the transition to becoming a bat mitzvah. If a parent is unsure of what to study with her daughter before her big day, this book is an incredible resource and covers beautiful topics such as Emunah, Tefilah, Shabbat, the love of Eretz Yisrael, etc. Pirkei Hallel has a comprehensive syllabus and is professionally bound in a light purple hardcover binding. It has beautiful glossy pages with pictures.  The embedded vignettes about Hallel’s life are beautiful and uplifting.

We were fortunate to study this book with Ayelet in preparation for her Bat Mitzvah and it has been rewarding for all of us. We have learned more about our purpose in life. And just as important, this journey has given us an opportunity to bond with Ayelet in a meaningful way. Additionally, it is an INCREDIBLE source of nechama (comfort) for Hallel's family in perpetuating her memory.

In appreciation for having learned so much from this book, Ayelet has been working to help perpetuate Hallel's memory by raising money to translate Pirkei Hallel into English.  Given the sophisticated Hebrew, she would like to afford those who are English speaking the same opportunity. She has been baking and selling brownies, cookies and cake pops over the past few months and will continue to do so over the next several months. On July 4th, she was greeted by both the mayor and councilman of Teaneck at the park when she stood outside in the heat raising money for this special cause.

We would like to help Ayelet in her initiative. Please join us in keeping Hallel’s memory alive. By so doing, you will be perpetuating not only Hallel's memory but also furthering the study of Torah. Although it has been two and a half years since her murder and there have been more horrible acts of murder since hers, we cannot forget anyone. We must never forget Hallel. Please join us in this endeavor, which in turn will also bring tremendous comfort to Hallel's family, who miss her so dearly every day. #bezchuthallelyaffa
