The DEFINITIVE Pirates of Penzance
We are the Northampton Gilbert and Sullivan Group!
Established in 1953 we are proud to have performed all of the works of Gilbert and Sullivan over our over 60 year history. We strive to keep these classic operetta alive and on stage, including The Mikado and HMS Pinafore. In 2018 we are returning to the much loved Pirates of Penzance at the Royal Theatre in Northampton.
As a charitable organisation run by amateurs and volunteers we are solely reliant on ticket prices to meet the considerable expenses of putting on a show. This go fund me page has been set up to help cover the cost of our award winning programmes that give more information about the history of the show and to celebrate our tireless actors, director, backstage crew and loyal supporters.
Why is this the DEFINITIVE version?
After the success of 'HMS Pinafore' Gilbert and Sullivan were horrified to learn of unofficial companies transcribing their shows and putting them on without them seeing any revenue from them. With their new show, 'Pirates of Penzance', the pair planned to release the show in England and the USA almost simultaneously by travelling across the Atlantic to launch their production themselves. In a bizarre twist of fate they left their manuscripts behind and so they had to rewrite their entire show from memory!
Because of this there soon became many different versions of the show with original lines cut, new lines added and differences in the musical content. In our upcoming show our dynamic director, Leon Berger (English National Opera), has brought together the multiple version into an innovative and highly original way.
In short: this is the opportunity to be a part of Gilbert and Sullivan history!
Thank you in advance for your kind support!
