DITR Piper's FHO Surgery
Donation protected
Piper was purchased from a local breeder in January of 2017 and at the time, certified by that breeder as healthy.
She was surrendered to us in July with severe hip dysplasia in both hips. The owners did not want to deal with a damaged dog that they had purchased as healthy, and that's when our volunteers stepped up.
Just a puppy and in pain. She's much calmer than your typical Labrador Retriever as her hips just can't take the activity that you expect to see in her breed and age.
On the recommendation of her veterinarian, Piper will be undergoing her first surgery in just a few weeks. She will be having a Femoral Head Ostectomy or FHO. We can do much more for her if we raise enough money.
FHO is a surgical procedure that removes the head and neck from the femur. FHO surgery is performed to alleviate pain. It is a salvage procedure, reserved for condition where pain can not be alleviated in any other way.
Unlike most other hip surgeries, the head of the femur is not replaced, but is allowed to heal and develop its own fibrous scar tissue so that the joint is no longer bone-to-bone.
In our mission to leave no pet behind, we also can't leave a pet in pain when there is a solution to it. We need your help so that Piper can lead a long, happy, pain free life.
Diamonds in the Ruff Animal Rescue, Inc. is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization based in Niagara County, New York. Our mission is simple: to provide foster homes for companion cats and dogs in need. We are strictly volunteer-based and rely on foster homes for our animals. We believe in the sentiment of no animal left behind and do our best to work with other rescue organizations to secure loving homes for all animals in need.
