Funding Phones for Creative Kids

The goal of the day camp is to teach students ages 8-11 how to play instruments. They will also learn how to photograph musicians and edit these photos using a smartphone.  Combining music and photography is one way central Texas children may be encouraged to go see live music with their friends and family while coming up with creative projects they can do together or on their own.  This program is designed to inspire students to think about careers in music, engineering, photography/videography, theater, computer science, audio engineering, just to name a few.




Why A Smartphone?

Smartphones are quality hand-held computers with a camera that can do much more than most realize.  Using a smartphone offers a way to teach these projects without the student, or family having to purchase additional and expensive equipment.  Having refurbished phones in the classroom means that all students have the opportunity to learn in class.  If they don’t own their own smartphone, they will learn to respectfully use their parent’s smartphone when at home.



What Do These Projects Offer (How Deep is the Rabbit Hole)?

Texas Music Partners teaches students to channel creativity to overcome challenges.  These projects will also help students and their families by doing the following:

- Assists at-risk students by offering an interest which may encourage them to stay in school.
- Utilizes the creative process when choosing a career.
- Incorporating the STEAM approach helps students develop creative teamwork and problem-solving skills to be competitive in ever-increasing competitive markets.
- Bringing families and friends together with outings to experience and photograph live music.
- Allows local businesses that support live music to encourage these family outings.
- Promotes local live music – Introducing youth to live music can inspire them to try band, orchestra, choir, or musical theater while helping keep the “Live Music Capital of the World” strong for future generations.
- It creates opportunities for students to meet and talk with live musicians, under adult supervision, to enhance lifetime appreciation of the arts.
- Shows the student how to pay it forward by having them offer the pictures they take to musicians to help promote their music.



This is the first summer we are holding a day camp!  This idea is an expansion of Texas Music Partners’ original platform of going into the schools to teach courses combining music and technology.  We lead by example and thinking positively while showing students how to break down projects are invaluable lessons.  Having a summer camp will expand our exposure to the students during the summer and reinforce the creative process year-round.
