Philly Teachers deserve a contract!

WE DID IT - BUT WE'RE NOT DONE!

Thanks to all of your generous donations, we were able to reach our original target in only FIVE DAYS!

The Billboard will appear on Interstate 95 (southbound on the right, at a prime location between the GIRARD and CENTRAL PHILA exits) beginning on FEBRUARY 27TH and remain there for four full weeks. I’ll post a photograph once it’s up.

Meanwhile, the Mayor is scheduled to unveil his budget to City Hall during the first week of March. This will be Mayor Kenney’s second budget since assuming office and, once again, it appears that the Mayor and City Council will propose ZERO increases to the School District budget. If this happens, Philadelphia’s dedicated teachers WILL NOT GET A CONTRACT for at least one more year.

IN THE MEANTIME, WE WILL CONTINUE TO FUNDRAISE INDEFINITELY AND DISPLAY THE BILLBOARD FOR AS LONG AS WE CAN.

When the Mayor, City Council, and the School District come up with the funds to support our public school children – and reward their hardworking educators with a fair contract – the billboard will come down.

UNTIL THEN, the hardworking and underpaid teachers of Philadelphia will continue to remind our officials of their obligations to our underfunded public schools.

ORIGINAL FUNDRAISER:
The hardworking members of the Philadelphia Federation of Teachers have gone without a raise for over 5 years while the School District of Philadelphia refuses to negotiate a fair contract for its workforce. Meanwhile, the city and state have neglected their duty to properly fund our schools so that this matter can finally be settled.

As each month passes with no agreement in sight, Philadelphia loses more and more great educators to other surrounding districts. It is the over 100,000 children in the district, however, who suffer the most because of this lack of a stable workforce.

It’s time to call out our city and school officials for allowing this calamity to continue. This project aims to cover the initial cost of printing and placing the above billboard at the indicated prime location on I-95, as specified and designed by OutFront Media.

The fundraiser will be extended on a month to month basis, as we continue to publicly shame the school district and the city, until a fair agreement is finally reached with the PFT.

Enough is enough – our schools, our students and our educators deserve better.

Hello all,

We've made great progress in just a few days - OVER HALF OUR GOAL!

THANK YOU SO MUCH!

The media has also picked up the story and, as you can tell in the attached press releases and statements, the School District and Mayor are now feeling the pressure to provide funding in the upcoming fiscal year in order to get the PFT's contract settled.

The billboard company has also informed me that if we hit our target soon, we can have the billboard up on I-95 starting by February 27th. This would make for perfect timing, seeing as the Mayor proposes his budget to City Council in the first week of March.

Let me be clear - without a budget increase for our schools in the Mayor's upcoming March proposal, THERE WILL BE NO CONTRACT for our hardworking educators for at least ONE MORE YEAR.

As a result, we will lose EVEN MORE great teachers and, once again, our public school children will suffer.

If you have not already done so, please DONATE in order to help keep the pressure up on the Mayor and the School District. If you have already donated, please consider DONATING AGAIN and, most importantly - SHARE WITH AS MANY PEOPLE AS YOU KNOW.

Thank you for all you have done,
--george
