Westford School's Periodic Pandas are heading to the First Lego League Global Innovation finals, and we need your help to get there!
After winning the VT FLL regional competition, our team was selected as one of 20 teams from over 30,000 entries from 30 countries to compete for a $20,000 mini XPRIZE. They were chosen for their outstanding Project innovative solution, BeeFinder.org, that demonstrated originality while having the potential to add significant value in the world. The team will travel to Washington, DC USA from June 17-21 to present their innovation to expert judges.
We are fundraising to cover a portion of hotel and transportation costs for the competition. The remainder will be raised from the participanting families and (hopefully) corporate sponsorship.
Project Background
The team, composed of members in grades 3 through 8, chose to focus their project work on creating a location aware software solution to identify and develop native bee habitat. Their solution uses open data (satellite imagery, GIS maps, etc.) to identify the necessary habitat conditions to promote thriving native bee populations, and make that data actionable for homeowners all the way up to regional or national policy makers . The team’s goal is to reverse the trend of declining pollinator population and its impact on our global food supply.
What Lego Robotics is all about
This is a really wonderful program that helps build engineering and math skills, as well as promoting the values of teamwork and discovery in learning. Teams compete on many levels, including in-depth research projects, engineering values, and robot programming challenges.
Students learn to design, build, and debug complex systems using engineering methodologies AND have fun doing it.
The team is coached by volunteers.
