Help me document and showcase the stories of musicians in the Gulf South!
This campaign will directly fund the creation of audio, video and photographic content that will be shared on community radio and the web.

About me and the idea:

I have a background in photography and museum production. Both deal directly with history, preservation and documentation. My real passions, however, are music and the people who create it. I grew up in North Florida, collecting records at flea markets and seeing Bo Diddley perform at school functions (crazy, right?!).

Beginning in 2010, I started researching, photographing and documenting the histories of musicians based in the Southeast. This led to my first involvement in community radio in Gainesville, Florida. Now residing in New Orleans, Louisiana, I host a weekly radio program on WWOZ. My radio show focuses on 1950s-1970s blues and soul music I’ve amassed as an avid record collector. It grants me opportunities to host guests in the WWOZ studio, meeting, face to face, the people who create the music I love such as Rev. John Wilkins, Cedric Burnside, Bobby Rush and Leo Bud Welch. However, most of the interviews are very condensed and usually focus around promotion of a performance in New Orleans.

In this project, my goal is to showcase oral histories in greater depth, documented through interviews with blues musicians in their homes, favorite bars and restaurants and sites of importance. These interviews could be edited for both radio and web based programming (think short documentaries) and enhanced with still photographs, music, and sounds from the trip.

The launch of this project will send me through Louisiana and to North Mississippi, stopping along the way to make photographs, video and audio interviews with musicians, producers and their friends and relatives who contribute to the culture of this region. My first set of interviews are scheduled in late June, 2017. I will travel to Jackson, Mississippi, and spend time with Bobby Rush (2016 Grammy winner) and then to the North Mississippi Hill Country Picnic, where I am scheduling other interviews in the area.

How your contribution will help:

Your donation will help me pay for travel expenses and lodging, equipment for audio and video capture, and post production editing.

I envison this as a long term project. These early contributions will provide the resources I need to gather content and further develop the stories I document.

At this time, I intend to share the video and audio programming through a partnership with a community radio station (in the works...)

Budget Breakdown:

Travel and lodging (Hotel, gas, meals): $800.00

Portable Video Lighting: $600.00

Additional batteries for lights, camera, audio recorder:

Additonal memory cards for camera and audio recorder:

Microphones (stereo and shotgun): $600.00

Film and processing: $300.00 (I will shoot medium format black and white film)

Dear supporters! This is the latest short film (in the works) that I have produced with your faith and donations!!!

I am so grateful to have you believe in me, and provide the assistance I need.

The series of documentaries is on-going, as is my need for funding to continue to create them.

I am still accepting donations to help with editing, acquisition of gear for recording and video, and artist fees and travel.

Thank you again!

Lots of work ahead. The donations were incredibly helpful! There were several expenses not accounted for (artist fees, some fuel miscalculations), but overall the trip was successful. Now I need to purchase Final Cut Pro, and make plans to do more interviews and travel. I have made arrangements for RL Boyce to travel to New Orleans this fall for more interviews and a live performance. I am still accepting donations to continue the project, so please spread the word. I have attached a short teaser for you to enjoy. Thanks again, I could not have started this project without all of your support. Dale
