***UPDATE FROM FAMILY ON CONDITION OF PEARL WASHINGTON - MARCH 3, 2016***
Pearl continues to be resting comfortably as he fights his disease, the brain tumor. He & the family are truly appreciative of the donations already made, the visits to the home & the phone calls from friends near and far.
Please continue to spread #PrayersForPearl as he deals with his battle to beat his cancer. The donations received to date are being used to help offset medical expenses and living expenses to help ease the families burdens. Pearl has seen on TV, fans wearing the PEARL t-shirts & the SU Basketball team wearing the warm up 'PEARL' shirts. He smiles in happiness!
On behalf of Pearl & the family, thank you! The support is overwhelming and appreciate
My longtime friend, Pearl Washington, a former Syracuse Orange basketball star who also played for the Nets and Heat in the NBA, has suffered a relapse of a brain tumor that he has been dealing with since 1995.
Pearl has been sticking in for a while, but unfortuantely there is a lot he is dealing with. He struggles to walk and needs assistance/supervision. I'm trying to get this next phase more comfortable for him.
Pearl will now require round-the-clock 24-hour care, a wheelchair and other necessities. I along with many other fellow Orange alumni are doing what we can to raise money for one of my favorite people in the world. Please consider donating.
Brandon Steiner is hosting a live-streamed Q&A at Facebook.com/Steiner (Brandon’s page) with current Syracuse Basketball Assistant Coach Coach Mike Hopkins and former Syracuse star John Wallace on Monday January 25th at 1pm ET to interact with fans and raise awareness for the #PrayersForPearl fundraising campaign.
On behalf of the family, thank you for the donations, thoughts, memories shared & prayers offered. I talk to Pearl two or three times EVERYDAY, and he KNOWS he is surrounded by much love & support. I was at his bedside for an entire week during his last inpatient stay at Memorial Sloane Kettering - he is NOT giving up..... He is FiGHTING against his illness. Peace to you all!!
I ran in a few pick-up games with Pearl and the team inside Manley Field House back in the mid-80s. Addison, Hawkins, Alexis, Monroe, Seikaly, Triche, so many greats. I think the day we moved to Syracuse was the day he hit that shot against BC. Everyone knew of him. Pearl would show up to Manley at unpredictable times and usually dressed in an orange collared shirt while carrying his books. He was soft spoken for the most part, humble. He would shoot around for a bit. And then I never saw a player who could just move from one place to another so quick. He just had this first step that left you standing with your jaw open. It was so competitive playing with that team. I thought I was right there with them until Wendell Alexis rotated over from the high post and threw my jump shot into the bleachers. Pearl got a kick out of that one. But I still had the opportunity to guard him and it’s something I’ll never forget. I hope that all of us can continue to guard Pearl from losing his health and keep a steady watch over him through prayer. God Bless, Pearl. Keep fighting.
Debra, Pearl's fiancé received a phone call from a teammate of Pearl earlier today. He was at Shirt World to purchase t-shirts. He told Debra, while there, that at least 25 people came in to buy t-shirts. Hearing this brought Debra to tears as she can't believe the support the family receiving. I have to admit, Pearl is very lucky to have Debra in his life. She deserves to be commended for being such a caring, loving caregiver to the person that we all love, Dwayne Pearl Washington!
The many comments left, validates what a legend Dwayne Pearl Wahington is. We are overwhelmed, that after two weeks, thoughts, prayers & donations continue coming from not only the Syracuse community and the Orange Nation, but, from all over the country. As I was quoted in a recent article, in Pearl's words, "Unbelievable!" On behalf of Pearl, he cares and loves you all. Go 'Cuse!
Forget about what a great basketball player he was...He was an even better person who made you feel great about life and yourself. He and his family did not deserve this and will be truly and sorely missed...
Thankyou to everyone that donated. We appreciate all the love and support. My as you already heard is not doing good with hope and prayer we make it from day to day. Thankyou all
Pearl, it's something to be admired by an opposing team and yet, DePaul players truly admired you as an athlete and person as you were friends with some of our New York teammates. You made playing Syracuse fun, well that is when DePaul won! I hope and pray only the best for you because that is what the best should have. I was shocked to hear of your illness but smiled at the outpouring of love and support that you have. That validates you not only as a premier athlete but also as a premier person. Personally, whenever I played against you, you were always a professional and I appreciated that. Again, my prayers to you as you recover. I will keep you in my prayers as you heal in the name of Jesus. All the best my friend and just know that you were and are admired. #depaulvssyracuse #wefightwefightwefight
Please know that Pearl & Debra are in our thoughts and prayers. We met Pearl at our son Scott's house back in 2004. What a pleasure it was. If there is an address that we can send cards to, you can pm me on Facebook. We have his picture and my goddaughter's picture in our dining room! Go CUSE!!!
I just wanted to share my prayers that I am praying for you. I grew up in syracuse when u were playing there and tried to follow your career but since moving from NY and went to play professional baseball, I LOST touch with what was going on in Syracuse, I didnt know of medical conditions, didnt know why you were not playing anymore back then. I thought u were the most fascinating CUSE player I ever saw. There wasnt any player or team that you couldnt shake. I can go on and on about the excitement u gave the CUSE fans. So get well soon.
Please fix the site so those of us who care for Pearl can donate.
Pearl I continue to pray for you daily and pray that you will continue to fight this and get well very soon. Thinking of you.
