Peaches' Veterinary Fund
*Peaches also goes by Lily, Snickers, and other names. This fund may also be used for her friends, MamaBean, or any other cats in need on campus.
We are making the push this semester to get official protection for Peaches from Duke administration. If you could please show your support by signing this petition I'd really appreciate it! I will probably be meeting with administration next week.
Apologies for not posting an update in a while. Peaches is doing great thanks to all of you and she is happy and healthy as ever and enjoying pets from students! I would encourage you to follow our Facebook group "Caretakers of Peaches (the calico cat)" if you want to see all the random and silly pictures students post of her when they get stress relief.
I wanted to let you know of a situation that arose last night, in which a student found a very sick kitten outside one of the campus buildings (pictures attached). It was too late to go to the vet, but he didn't seem to be in life-threatening danger other than some diarrhea (and she was eating fine and walking around) so we decided to wait out the night and take her to the vet in the morning (he is actually at the vet as I type this, pic attached; confirmed, it is a boy!). We have about $700 left of the fund after all of Peaches' and Mamabeans' vaccines and I can't say how grateful I am for everyone's generosity and for making care of these cats possible. As cute as the kitten is, this means we'll be on the lookout for possibly two unfixed cats on campus and looking into getting them spay/neutered. We're also working with local animal rescues to trap them as fall break for the students comes up.
Thanks for your continued support and I'll keep you all updated! Off to take a midterm now...
Anna & the other student caretakers
Have the caretakers looked into the SNAP mobile unit? They spay/neuter pet cats as well as free roaming community cats (like these beloved Duke cats). Their website is www.snap-nc.org and the cats would have to go in humane traps. The cost also covers rabies and distemper vaccines. They have low cost testing, other vaccines and medications too.
These kittys have lived on West Campus for the past 5 years. I use to feed them everyday until I left (and this would infuriate Deb LoBiondo who hated these cats). This is Marianne, her sister now lives at my house (named Marge) and another sister Mabel lives near Wannamaker. The last sister was Milly who was killed by a Papa Johns Pizza driver. She is buried by the round-about. I still go on campus to visit and feed them. Best cats ever!
