HJB Elementary School Playground

Donation protected
Hilda J. Barbour or HJB is an 18 year old elementary school in Warren County Virginia. We have 536 students in attendance and currently house the Intellectual Disabilities Special Education program for Warren County Elementary Schools. Transforming our aging playground into an area that is accessible to all children will help prevent any student from being a bystander on the playground because they are unable to participate.

We are encouraging lifelong healthy lifestyles through play for all our students. Unfortunately, with the current 18 year old playground equipment and areas that are inaccessible to our handicap population it is impossible to give the children all of the support they need. Children at the elementary age are being greatly affected by obesity, diabetes, heart disease, and other preventable diseases. By having a fitness and cardiovascular centered playground that is accessible to all, we are giving students the opportunity to fight off these diseases and become more active in an enjoyable way. A playground provides critical support to student’s physical, social, and emotional development. Playgrounds allow children to interact with one another and help children with and without disabilities to discover who they are and what they are capable of.

Our community has been extremely supportive. The county, WCPS, PTO, teachers and parents have been working together to create this amazing opportunity for the children in our school and the entire community. The one hurdle we still face is the cost. Please consider donating what you can to help as reach our goal. Donors will be acknowledged on our school website, PTO Facebook page, and in the Principal’s newsletter. In addition to supporting the community, our school PTO is a 501(c)3 and any donations made may be tax deductible as charitable donations as allowed by law.

We are currently working very hard to complete Phase I of the renovation before the end of September 2015.

Phase I: We have renovated and extended the safety surfaced mulched area to be wheelchair accessible and to provide room for new equipment. We have created a cardio loop around the perimeter of the entire playground which needs to be paved to become handicap assessable. The cost total for paving the loop is $8,000. We currently have $2,000 and need to raise the remaining $6,000 to complete Phase I of the renovation.
