This is nineteen year old Coral Peloquin.
Doesn’t she have a beautiful smile? Her smile lights up the room when she walks in, and the twinkle in her eye is magic.
We have known Coral since she was six years old. Her family and our family became instant best friends when we moved in beside each other on the same rural Ontario road twelve years ago.
As a young girl Coral was full of life and energy, and always had a mischievous twinkle in her eye, and there was always that great big beautiful smile.
When Coral was about eleven years old things started to change for her. We could see her struggling. She became overly concerned about her body image, her parents learned she was secretly over-exercising and restricting her food, her weight began to fall. This was the beginning of an eight year battle with a killer disease, Anorexia.
Of course her concerned parents got her medical attention immediately. From then until now, Coral has been in and out of fourteen different hospitals and eating disorder clinics everywhere from Toronto to Ottawa, to Peterborough, and Utah.
Each time, just when things were starting to look like she was gaining momentum and winning the battle against this eating disorder, it would charge back at her stronger than ever.
Coral is currently at the worst state ever with this illness. She is currently hospitalized in Ottawa, in a sedated state with a feeding tube, and at a critically low weight. The hospital has told her family that their goal is to increase her weight by 5 pounds, and then release her.
Coral is exhausted from fighting for so long, her parents are exhausted from fighting for so long, and this illness has exhausted every opportunity that the Ontario medical system has to offer. This disease is just too strong, and has taken over her life.
But we are determined to not let it take her life. We want to see that smile again.
The Peloquins are running out of options to treat Coral. There are some question marks in terms of future steps. There are some possible different scenarios. While Coral's parents exhaust every opportunity they can, we have decided to try to help how we can.
Whether the next step is taking Coral for medical treatment out of country (when she becomes physically stable), or bringing her home (where a parent would have to be with her full time), any next step is going to be an incredible financial burden for the family.
Many of you have been asking how you can help. This is where we can all pitch in a little. Any small amount that you offer would be greatly appreciated and will go towards healing Coral, and bringing that radiant smile back to her face.
