Pastor Don's Trip to Puerto Rico

Will you help me go to Puerto Rico to assist local pastors facing a long road of recovery following Hurricane Maria? On September 20, 2017 a Category 5 Hurricane stormed through the Caribbean leaving massive devastation in its path. The scenes, images, and stories brought back haunting memories of when Hurricane Katrina decimated our community here on the Mississippi gulf coast back in 2005. It took nearly a decade of relief, recovery, and rebuilding. Our thoughts and prayers are with those who suffered and are suffering through this. I want to help any way I can.

My good friend Mateo Melendez has been working with church planters in Puerto Rico for several years now. He knows the area, he knows the pastors, and plans a trip down in the middle of November. He said, who better to go with him than someone who has walked in their shoes? So when he asked me to go, I jumped at the opportunity. I pray that my story and experience will encourage these pastors and their people in their task to magnify the glory of God in the wake of the storm.

We will also be scouting out opportunities for you to make future mission trips to the effected island. We want to provide immediate help and create long term partnerships where we can do the most good. I'll be reporting on the trip through our Rebuild Lakeshore  website and Facebook page. We covet your prayers. If you can help financially with my trip, please contribute and share with others.

Thank you so much for making my trip to Puerto Rico possible. I met some wonderful people there. I pray that I was an encouragement to them. They were an amazing encouragement to me. You can read my report of the trip and pictures at our Rebuild Lakeshore website: Stand Up for Puerto Rico.

I'm heading to Puerto Rico this week, thanks to your generous support. Thank you so much! Pray that I can be an encouragement to the folks there. I know they have a long road of recovery ahead of them. Christ proved Himself faithful after Hurricane Katrina and my hope is unshaken for those leaning upon Christ in Puerto Rico.

"We were so utterly burdened beyond our strength that we despaired of life itself. Indeed, we felt that we had received the sentence of death. But that was to make us rely not on ourselves but on God who raises the dead. He delivered us from such a deadly peril, and he will deliver us. On him we have set our hope that he will deliver us again." (2 Cor 1:8-10)

The schedule and plans are coming together for my time in Puerto Rico. I will be staying with Pastor Brad Williams of Grace Church in Guaynabo PR. We are lining up other meetings with other pastors across the island. One tentative meeting will be with 17 local pastors. Please pray that works out and that I will be an encouragement to them.

I am especially looking forward to meeting with Pastor Noble Vater, in San Juan. We have several mutual friends in Reformed Baptist circles. This dear brother has served as pastor on the island for over 40 years. He has a bookstore there and is doing a good work.

It sounds like travel is very difficult, as you can imagine. Downed power lines, debris in the roads, washed out bridges, non-working traffic lights, and other things are making getting from place to place challenging. Please pray that my time there will be most productive, despite these obstacles.

I am overwhelmed and humbled by every ones quick response and generosity. I have reached the initial $1,200 goal to cover the costs of this trip. Thank you so much.

Any additional funds collected will go toward this same effort, so I have increased the goal. We have been in contact with some of the pastors there and one of the biggest difficulties is lack of electrisity. I plan to bring some portable power banks, personal solar panels, and cell phone chargers with the extra funds. I'm also listening for anything else they could use, that is small enough to bring on our luggage.

Thank you so much for your support. You are making a real difference.
