Passaggio dall'Eritrea all'Etiopia

IL PROGETTO

L’idea di questo reportage nasce da un importante evento della storia contemporanea. L’8 luglio 2018 è giunta una delle notizie più eclatanti degli ultimi tempi, riguardante il continente africano: il nuovo primo ministro etiope e il presidente eritreo hanno firmato una dichiarazione di pace, ponendo fine alla guerra che ha plasmato la storia dei due Paesi sin dal secolo scorso.
Di conseguenza abbiamo deciso di intraprendere un viaggio della durata di due mesi circa.

Il nostro intento è quello di mischiarci tra la gente, nei villaggi, tra popolazioni che per decenni sono rimaste isolate dal mondo intero, senza avere mai contatti con l’occidente. Vogliamo dar loro l’opportunità di raccontare la propria verità, di raccontarsi. Di sentirsi liberi di esprimersi, dopo anni di reclusioni e spargimenti di sangue disumani. Vogliamo dar voce a chi fino a ora non ne ha mai avuta. I nostri obiettivi saranno i loro occhi, le nostre penne le loro parole. Racconteremo uno spaccato di politica, economia, società e vita quotidiana di una realtà che, come molte altre realtà “non occidentali”, ha avuto troppa poca risonanza nella nostra fetta di mondo.

Nel corno d’Africa pare che la situazione si sia riassestata dopo la più lunga lotta per l’indipendenza del continente nero e una guerra che ha attraversato l’area negli ultimi vent’anni, a bassa e purtroppo a volte alta intensità. La riconciliazione è avviata. Gli annunci si susseguono, altre aperture si attendono. Un processo di pacificazione segnato da firme di trattati, aperture di confini, scambi di ambasciatori, ripristino di collegamenti aerei (è stata riaperta la rotta aerea tra le due capitali, Asmara e Addis Abeba). Si tratta di uno scenario che sembra appartenere anche alle persone, non solo alle leadership.
In questo clima, in mezzo all’attualità del possibile mutamento e ai chiaroscuri della storia recente, si attraverserà l’Eritrea. Dall’altopiano alle basse terre e al Mar Rosso, accostando la vita quotidiana della gente comune. Per le vie della capitale (eletta patrimonio mondiale dall’Unesco), tra centro e periferie, e lungo strade e piste, coste e pianure semidesertiche fino a isole remote e siti archeologici, a piedi, su pulmini, lance, treni a vapore.
Vorremmo attraversare il confine Eritrea-Etiopia via terra, ma non sappiamo se questo sarà possibile in un futuro prossimo, altrimenti passeremo da uno stato all’altro per via aerea.
Attraverseremo l’Etiopia del Nord rurale, religioso. Ci addentreremo nella grande depressione dancala, tra paesaggi minerali e vulcani attivi. Muovendoci lungo la “rotta storica” – da Axum a Gondar e Lalibela, in occasione della Pasqua copta – passando per parchi e cascate, montagne e laghi, accostando la vita quotidiana nei villaggi, raggiungendo chiese nella roccia e monasteri in mezzo all’acqua, spostandoci in barca, a piedi, pulmino o aereo, dormendo in campi tendati e piccoli hotel, approdando infine ad Addis Abeba, metropoli dalle 80 etnie.

Il budget della campagna corrisponde all’insieme di diverse spese, per due persone:


• voli aerei intercontinentali a/r (e interni, nel caso in cui non dovesse essere ancora possibile attraversare il confine via terra)

• spese mediche per vaccini e profilassi

• spese assicurative (che copre i rischi sanitari e quelli relativi al viaggio)

• spese di Visto per poter entrare in entrambi i Paesi (1 Visto per Eritrea, 1 Visto per Etiopia)

• eventuale appoggio a un Tour Operator specializzato (soprattutto per l’Eritrea, che fino a qualche mese fa era quasi del tutto chiuso al turismo: in tal caso potremmo necessitare di permessi specifici ed eventualmente un autista/guida per l’accesso ad aree più difficili o posti in cui sia indispensabile un traduttore)

Isabella Bradascio nasce a Bari il 31 luglio 1990. Laureata in Lettere, Editoria e Giornalismo all’Università degli Studi di Bari, intraprende la carriera di giornalista freelancer. Si specializza nell’ambito della comunicazione frequentando corsi in Redazione Editoriale, Social Media Marketing e Storytelling. Nel 2017 fonda il blog di viaggi www.quandoarriviscrivi.it, dove pubblica diari di viaggio e reportage. Decide di proseguire gli studi con un Master in Reportage di Viaggio-Fotogiornalismo all’Università di Roma Tor Vergata.

Gianmarco Di Costanzo nasce a Napoli il 31 luglio 1990. Laureato in Lingue, Letterature e Culture dell’Europa e delle Americhe, Inglese e Portoghese, decide di proseguire gli studi con un Master in Reportage di Viaggio-Fotogiornalismo all’Università di Roma Tor Vergata. Nel 2018 partecipa a un workshop fotografico alle isole Tremiti e alla conseguente mostra collettiva Arcipelago ad Oriente esposta al Festival di Letteratura di Viaggio a Roma.

Nel 2018 collaborano insieme alla direzione artistica del Festival della Letteratura di Viaggio a Roma, collaborando alla redazione del Libro-catalogo del Festival, il festBook, con la casa editrice Exòrma.
Sono stati assistenti di Antonio Politano, noto fotoreporter del panorama nazionale, nel laboratorio di fotografia con minori stranieri non accompagnati, accolti dal Centro Intersos 24 di Torre Spaccata a Roma.
Iniziano a viaggiare, fotografare e scrivere in gioventù per diletto, adesso vogliono farne una vera e propria professione.

THE PROJECT

The idea of this Reportage came up months ago – on the 8th July 2018, when we heard one of the most incredible news about the African continent of the last years: the new Ethiopian Prime Minister and the Eritrean President signed a peace deal, putting an end to the war that had been destroying both countries, whose populations had been isolated from the West for decades.

Our purpose is to blend in with those people, walk around their villages and give them voice, so that they can have the opportunity to tell their story and speak their truth after years of bloodshed and segregation. Our lens will be their eyes, our pens will be their speech. We will give you an insight into the politics, the economy, the society and the daily life of a reality that, just like many other non-western ones, had too little resonance in our part of the world.

Nowadays, it seems that the situation in the African Horn has reassessed after the longest fight for independence of the black continent and a war crossing the area  for the past twenty years, with low and, unfortunately, high intensity. Reconciliation started. News follow one another, new openings are awaited. A pacification process marked by treaties signatures, boundaries openings, ambassadors' exchanges, resets of air connections (the air route between the two capital cities, Asmara and Addis Abeba, has been reopened). It's about a scenario that seems to belong also to the people, not only to the leaderships. With this atmosphere, between the actuality of a possible change and the ups and downs of the recent history, we will walk across Eritrea. From the upland to the low lands and the Red Sea, matching with the daily life of the common people. Through the streets of the capital city (elected as World Heritage by Unesco), between the centre and the suburbs, along streets and tracks, through coasts and semidesert lands, up to remote islands and archaeological sites, on foot, by minibuses, speed boats, steam trains. We would like to cross the boarder Eritrea - Etiopia overland, but we don't know if this will be possible in the near future, otherwise we will move from a state to another by air. We will go across the rural and religious North Ethiopia. We will go into the Afar Triangle, through mineral landscapes and active volcanoes. Going along the "historical route" - from Axum to Gondar and Lalibela, on the occasion of the Coptic Easter - passing through parks and waterfalls, mountains and lakes, pulling together the daily life of the villages, reaching churches into the rocks and monasteries in the middle of the water, travelling by boat, on foot, minibuses or planes, sleeping in tented camps and small hotels, in the end arriving at Addis Abeba, eighty ethnicities metropolis.

 

 THE AUTHORS
 
Isabella Bradascio was born in Bari on the 31st of July 1990. Graduated in Literature, Publishing and Journalism at the University of Bari, starts her career as a freelance journalist. She specializes in the communication field attending courses in editorial editing, Social Media Marketing and Storytelling. In 2017 she creates the travel blog www.quandoarriviscrivi.it, where she publishes travel diaries and reportages. She decides of continuing her studies with a Master in Travel Report and Photojournalism at the University of Rome "Tor Vergata".

Gianmarco Di Costanzo was born in Naples on the 31st of July 1990. Graduated in Languages, Literatures and Cultures of Europe and America, English and Portuguese, he decides to continue his studies with a Master in Travel Report and Photojournalism at the University of Rome "Tor Vergata". In 2018 he takes part to a photographic reportage at the Tremiti islands and consequently to the collective exhibition Arcipelago ad Oriente, shown at the Travel Literature Festival in Rome.

 
In 2018 they work together on the artistic direction of the Travel Literature Festival in Rome. collaborating in the editing of the Festival Catalog-Book, the FestBook, with the publishing house Exòrma.
They're assistants to Antonio Politano, famous photojournalist of the national panorama, in the photography lab with unaccompanied foreign minors, welcomed by Intersos 24 Centre, in Torre Spaccata, Rome.
They travel, take photos and write for fun since they were young, now they want to make it a profession.
