Park Bench for Jimmy Wolpert
On June 12, 2018 the San Diego community lost the most incredible soul. Jimmy Wolpert was a beloved son, friend, and local comedian who impacted hundreds of lives. He filled many local comedy venues with laughter over the last five years and brought a smile to the face of just about everyone he encountered. Those who have been remembering him this week have often said Jimmy was their first friend in San Diego; a direct reflection of his genuine heart and kind nature.
This week, we discovered a tweet from Jimmy dating back to January 2017. We like to think this is his way of telling us how he would like to be remembered. We are going to do everything in our power to make a memorial bench come true to honor our friend's life and memory.
We've set a goal of $5000 until we are able to get a direct answer from San Diego City Council. We've based this number on a few quotes we received for having a memorial bench placed in San Diego County. 100% of the proceeds will be used towards either erecting a memorial bench or having a plaque placed on an existing one.
Any surplus of funds will be used towards a memorial plaque in Ocean Beach (quoted at $150) where Jimmy often performed at Winston's. Depending on the success of this campaign, we are also considering a scholarship to benefit students in the performing arts.
Our sincerest thank you in advance for helping us reach this goal.
Hayli and Rachael
We've hit several roadblocks and dead ends with the city of San Diego to the point we feared we wouldn't be able to see this goal to completion. Justin, one of Jimmy's closest childhood friends, has teamed up with us this week. He (and others) suggested we reach out to the City of Poway to see if it would be easier to move forward with our park bench goal. Not only did he get in contact with the right people, but we've made significant forward momentum in making this park bench happen!
Some of you may already know, but Jimmy had a lookout spot in Poway he's been visiting since high school (see location 1 in attached photo). He would go there to take in the panoramic views, people watch, write jokes, or simply take time to be with himself. It has a beautiful view of a local park (Starridge Park near Candy Cane Lane) and sits at the beginning of a hiking trail. Not only has the City of Poway been receptive to the idea, but they are excited to work with us to see this project through!!!
We received a quote of $1800 (versus the 5k quote we received from San Diego City) which is HUGE. This is wildly attainable and we are so excited. In one week we've almost hit the $1300 mark. ONE. WEEK! Which means we can easily meet/surpass the new and reduced quote.
As a reminder: 100% of the funds raised will be used towards the construction materials and installation of the park bench. Anything surplus of what we need will be disbursed to other memorial projects. Some of these include:
- Financial assistance for Jimmy's parents to help cover any outstanding costs.
- Scholarship for students participating in Performing Arts, Improv, or attending Comedy workshops.
- A Memorial Plaque in Ocean Beach ($150)
We have a few options as far as placement of the bench and type of materials we are able to use. As we get closer to getting the green light, we will ask for your valued input on what the plaque should say, what type of bench you would like to see placed, and any other suggestions you may have!
We can not begin to thank you for your generosity, contributions, input, love, and support in helping us make this park bench a reality. Not only will it be a wonderful gathering place for us to be with Jimmy, but it will be a lasting contribution to the Poway community for others to use and enjoy.
Thank you. We love you.
