URGENT! Funding Needed to save Rare SCI Goats
Donation protected
Howdy folks!
My name is Erin Link and am steward to a herd of critically endangered San Clemente Island Goats. I live in western WI and currently have a herd ranging between 30-60. I am working with a core group of other SCI goat breeders in the US to figure out a major dilemma.
Recently an urgent matter came up with a fellow steward and breeder to these rare goats. This breeder is no longer fully capable of taking care of his 150+ herd for SCI Goats and 30 British Soay Sheep. This breeder has made the decision to relinquish his entire herd to other SCI goat breeders. This means A LOT of things and we have to act quickly. This breeder lives in an area where winter will be arriving quickly, and there isn't adequate shelter for these goats among other issues.
We need to cover transport costs from MN to VA=$8,000
Veterinary costs=To be assessed
Minerals and various medical costs=$1,000+
Hay and feed costs for at least 4 months=$7,000+
This whole process is still in the works. A core group of breeders are coming up with an accurate budget. We will update when this is more fleshed out. Though I want to point out just how important this project is. There was a current census taken of these rare goats, and numbers are around 1,000. This group of 150 goats is about 20% of the entire population. In that herd are unique and rare lines and genetics that NEED to be preserved.
All of this is very important work to keep this genetically unique goat breed alive and well. The urgency matter just came to me on 10/21/2019, myself and others are trying our hardest to act on this and help this breeder out. This breeder has been raising these goats for at least 20+ years and has done SO MUCH WORK with them. It's the least we can do to help him out and help these goats out.
It's also so hard to explain the complexity of this whole issue. I am happy to give more details as questions come in.
Thank you so much, if you have ANY questions or would like clarification feel free to email me at [email redacted]
In the mean time, enjoy the goat pictures!
