Paddle the Peninsula

Hello! We are Chris, Hannah, Lance and Julian. Our team of explorers and scientists are setting out on a historic science mission to explore the West Antarctic Peninsula. Our two month expedition will demonstrate that we can explore and study one of the most remote and pristine areas on Earth without negatively affecting it. We will also show that the spirit of discovery and adventure can go hand-in-hand with high quality and important research. Check out our expedition website at www.paddlethepeninsula.com !
We have partnered with some great organizations to make the trip happen, including NRS , P&H Kayaks , RBR Instruments , and Soylent . These sponsors have generously donated things like kayaks, drysuits, and science sensors, but we still have a long way to go to get ready for our trip.
The expedition will begin in the northern end of the Antarctic Peninsula and then proceed south. As we travel down the Peninsula, we will collect data such as ocean temperature and salinity, as well as documenting species we encounter and weather data.
We'll also be filming the trip to produce a documentary about the experience to help raise awareness of the threats facing this amazing place. We'll record ourselves using GoPro cameras, traditional dDLRs, and potentially UAVs to capture stunning footage of our team in action, and the amazing vistas we encounter.
By using sea kayaks and a sailing support vessel, our expedition will have the lowest carbon footprint of any modern Antarctic research expedition. The data we collect will be integrated into existing datasets as well as made available under an open source license for anyone to use. We have partnered with researchers at Rutgers University and Duke University's Marine Lab to identify areas of interest and ways we can help their continued studies of Antarctica.
Our expedition goals are:
− Kayak and travel into areas rarely (if ever) explored by mankind, and record data about the environment and ocean in the area.
− Document and record all aspects of the expedition and produce a world-class film of the experience
− Collect surface ocean, shoreline, landing and bathymetry data where possible, as well as any additional science as time and resources allow
− Determine feasibility for future expeditions in surrounding areas
Funds from this campaign will go towards our research expedition for things like survival gear, food, science equipment and logistics/transportation of the team down to Antarctica and back. Your support will help us make our vision of environmentally friendly polar research a reality. We need to raise approxomately $200,000 before November 2018 to make our trip a reality. And of course, your donations towards our 501(c)3 non-profit organization are tax deductable!
