Pacific 2018

Donation protected
By 2018, six years will have passed since Blossom (my boat) and I were in Japan, setting off from Choshi, heading for the western seaboard of the USA, in a Guinness World Record rowing attempt.

All was going well until we encountered Typhoon Mawar.  Fortunately, Blossom and I were both recovered from the ocean by a passing ship.

Blossom (and I!) are now repaired and ready to make another attempt at this elusive Guinness World Record feat – to be the first person in history, to row solo and unsupported across the North Pacific Ocean, from Japan to the USA.

A number of lessons have been learned from the test of 2012. But the Pacific Ocean is not an easy ocean and 2018 will not be an easy trip.

As a double Guinness World Record holder, Royal Engineer Charlie Martell is no stranger to adventure. Active service in Iraq, Bosnia and Northern Ireland led to a post-Army career in the humanitarian sector, where he has specialised in post-conflict resolution. Working in mine-affected countries such as Cambodia, Angola and the Republic of Georgia opened his eyes to what specialists like him could do for communities living amongst mines, bombs and other debris of war.

“I met and worked with some incredibly brave people, not just those who work in mine-clearance but also those who work for other aid agencies, who all commit to making the world a better and safer place,” he says.

Perhaps not surprisingly, individuals such as Charlie don’t commit to taking ‘normal’, conventional breaks from work. Charlie’s previous expeditions include a 300-mile ski-trek to the Magnetic North Pole, and a four-man row across the North Atlantic Ocean; together these expeditions raised more than £250,000 for charity.

Charlie's Guinness World Record attempt doesn't come cheap. Once all expedition costs are covered, Charlie aims to raise an equivelent amount in charitable donations, which will be directed to:

1. Give Them a Sporting Chance (GTaSC),
2. Veterans In Action (VIA)

GTaSC is a charity focusing on giving disabled people and/or their carers the opporunity to do something they wouldn't normally have the chance to do.

VIA is a charity committed to helping those whom suffer from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder.

I would be incredibly grateful if you would support me in my Guinness World Record attempt and in so doing, help me raise funds for my chosen charities.
