Our son Elliot has waited 895 days to live outside hospital walls. He was born prematurely, weighing just 2lbs 14oz at birth. Although he entered this world as a tiny preemie, he’s got more strength than anyone we’ve ever met. His fight for life is undeniable. Defying the odds is something he’s done from day one. Elliot has severe lung problems. Due to his chronic lung disease, severe Broncho Pulmonary Dysplacia (BPD), and severe TracheoBroncheoMalacia (TBM) Elliot is on a ventilator. He currently is dependent on his tracheotomy, ventilator, and g-tube to live. Our home hospital, Kaiser LAMC, told us he was “the worse case they had ever seen” and they weren’t sure how to keep him alive after placing him into a paralyzed coma. Even when neonatologists, PICU intensivists, nurses, and respiratory therapists were mystified as to how to treat Elliot’s lung disease he kept fighting. Thanks to the connective ability of social media we were able to reach out to parents in different parts of the country who had children with lung issues similar to Elliot. Amazingly we found our saving grace in Nationwide Children’s hospital. By following their specific ventilation protocol for BPD we were able to stabilize Elliot and wean him off all his sedation meds. Due to the extremely high pressures required to keep his airway open, Elliot had to remain hospitalized. His long term hospitalization deepened his developmental delays. His chronological age is 2.5 years, but developmentally he’s a 6 month old. Needless to say we’ve got a long road ahead of us to rehabilitate and strengthen his development. Not only will this include expensive rehab equipment, but also out of pocket therapies that our insurance doesn’t cover. Specifically acupuncture and ABM therapy to help with his cognitive development. We also need to purchase a vehicle that better accommodates all his equipment, perhaps even a handicap van. While we have faith that Elliot’s developmental status will improve over time unfortunately many rehab services and equipment are very costly. We know we have years, if not a lifetime, of therapies ahead of us, but are still so blessed at how far our boy has already come. He’s our own living miracle! 31848032_1533265797626588_r.jpeg31848032_1533265836882366_r.jpeg
