Overdue Meal Account Fund - MMSD
$4,155 of $2,000 goal
Inspired by this amazing suggestion and conversation on Twitter, I am collecting funds to donate to the Madison Metropolitan School District (Madison, WI) to help pay down students' overdue meal accounts. I've spoken with Steve Youngbauer, the Director of the Food and Nutrition program, who has indicated that there is significant need in this area. He said that the donation will be prioritzed to help the students with the greatest need first.
Let's take some pressure off families in our own community this holiday season. How much can we raise?
Not from Madison, WI? You're welcome to donate, but I also encourage you to reach out in your own community. Give a local school or district a call and ask about overdue meal accounts.
As promised, it’s December 22nd, and I’ve turned off donations on this campaign. I’m in touch with MMSD now to set a date/time to deliver a final check with your contributions. Thank you again and again for your generosity and interest in this campaign. You’ll hear from me one more time, when Steve Youngbauer follows up with some specifics about where our money has gone. I’ll share that information when I have it.
If you have found this campaign after it has ended, never fear! You can send a check to -
Madison Metropolitan School District Food and Nutrition
4711 Pflaum Road
Madison, WI 53718
On the memo line of the check, you should mark that your donation is intended for overdue meal accounts.
I had a lovely meeting with Steve Youngbauer last Friday afternoon (snowstorm and all!), in which I presented him with a check for $2,153.21, representing both the first wave of your donations and my contribution to recover some of the GoFundMe fee. More withdrawals are pending and, by next week, I will have transferred all funds raised over to MMSD. To accomplish that and pass on your generosity in an orderly way, on Thursday, December 22nd, I'll be shutting down this fundraiser. If you intended to share the link but haven't yet, this is your chance!
I want to thank you all again for your generosity and enthusiasm for this idea. Steve said he'll be providing an update with more specific examples of how our money has helped. I'll share it with all of you when he does.
Warm Wishes for the Holiday Season and New Year,
Since my last update, I've had a couple of great conversations with Steve Youngbauer of the MMSD Food and Nutrition Program. Steve has indicated to me that the best way for the District to receive the donation is as a check, not a direct deposit as I previously assumed. As such, I have moved the funds to my checking account and will be delivering them to the offices tomorrow (Friday) afternoon between 1:30 and 2:30.
As things currently stand and after GoFundMe has taken its cut, I will be writing a check for 2,103.71. If/when additional donations come in, I'll pass those along, too, in the same fashion. I will also be adding my own donation, to help recover the percentage taken by GoFundMe.
If anyone has any questions or comments, please let me know. Again, I cannot thank all of you enough for your generosity and enthusiasm.
Again - wow! Thanks to your remarkable generosity and sharing of this campaign, we have reached the initial $1500 goal in just four days! As MMSD Food and Nutrition has indicated that the need is significant, I've increased the goal to $2000. We can keep going!
I emailed the Director of the Food and Nutrition Program last night to share our progress. I'm going to give him a call today as our progress has... progressed quite a bit since that email.
Given the impressive total donations we're working with here, I am going to explore having GoFundMe deposit your donations directly in MMSD's account, rather than moving the money through my bank account. If you would like to learn how this process works so that you can understand where your money is going and how it is going there, follow this link - https://support.gofundme.com/hc/en-us/articles/204993267-How-do-I-send-the-funds-to-someone-else-US-Only-
Finally, I will let all of you know when your money starts moving to families in need. Know that, even when that begins happening, the number displayed showing the total money raised will not change.
Thank you again to all of you for sharing the word and donating.
