Jaguar Reintroduction in the Amazon

$44,861 of $40,000 goal

Raised by 126 people in 18 months

Our aim is to replicate the successful Jaguar reintroduction process done by our team in the Pantanal back in June 2016, this time in the Amazon rainforest.

That was the only time in history when Jaguar cubs where successfully reintroduced into the wild. The project was extensively documented by various medias including the BBC, NatGeo Wild as well as various newspapers, websites and magazines.

We aim to prove that the technique developed by Onçafari and Cenap/ICMBio can be replicated in other ecosystems.

If we are also successful in this attempt in the Amazon this technique could be applied to save Jaguars elsewhere in Brazil, like the Atlantic Forest for example, where Jaguars are bordering extinction.

It could also potentially be applied in other countries and even with other big cats of the Panthera genus.

Our team is taking care of two orphan female Jaguars that have been found near the area where we plan to reintroduce them. They were less than two month old when they where found and would surely have not survived if we had not rescued them. It is unclear what happened to their mother but it is very likely she has been illegally hunted.

We are in the early stages of building a 110,000 square feet enclosure in the Amazon where the two sisters will go through the same process that was proven successful in the Pantanal. For about a year we will teach them how to hunt and how to become wild again, to the point where they can be released back into the wild.

We need your help to be able to finish the construction of the enclosure.

This project means a lot to all involved and it will be a huge step towards the conservation of the species. We are hoping to save the lives of these two Jaguars and give back their freedom.

We are counting on you to help us finish the construction as soon as possible so that we can start the "training" process.

Thank you for joining this campaign, for sharing it with others, for your contribution and for giving Jaguars a brighter future.

Dear Friends,

I’m happy to report that both Jaguars are now wild and free!

They have been back in the wild for 18 days now.
On July 1st we examined them both, fitted them with new GPS tracking collars, took them up River for about 50km ( 30 miles ) and released them on a beautiful sandy beach in the Amazon Rainforest.

We have been tracking them since and they both seem to be adapting very well to their new life.
I’ll be back soon with more news about them.
Once again I’d like to take this opportunity to thank each and everyone of you that contributed to this campaign and made this process possible.

The work is not over though, we are now on the monitoring phase. We analyze satellite dat daily and try to understand their movements and see how they react to life in this new environment.

Many thanks and all the best,

Ps: please find photos of them being examined, transported and just about to being released.

Dear Friends,
Just wanted to send you all a quick update on the progress of this rewinding project.

Both Jaguars have grown a lot since we started taking care of them about 1 year ago and have now reached their maturity.
They are strong, healthy and very fit. They have been hunting all sorts of preys, from small animals to big male peccaries and seem more and more anxious to interact with the wild Jaguars in the wild. (See photo)

We now feel it is time to release them BACK INTO THE WILD!!! We are all ready and anxious for the moment when they will be once again wild and free!

Next week we plan to fit them both with new GPS collars, make the last health check and give them back their freedom.

It was a long journey for them to get to this point.. from loosing their mother when they where only a few days old, struggling to survive at a very young age, being sent to a rescue center to be treated, getting to know their new purposely built enclosure in the Amazon to finally learning how to hunt...

Please send them good wishes and I'll be back with more news once they are ROAMING FREE IN THE AMAZON RAINFOREST.

We have almost reached our funding goal for this project and there is still time to help. Please help if you can and share this link in your social medias, with your friends and family.

All the best and thank you very much,

On the photo we can see Pandhora (one of the females that will be rewilded) interacting with a big wild male Jaguar.

This is a very special week for Onçafari! Especially for our Rewild front.
Exactly 3 years ago, on June 9th 2016 we set 2 orphaned jaguars, Isa and Fera, free . Those 2 jaguars were rescued when they where only 2 month-old and had we not interfered they would now be behind bars.

When we accepted the challenge of rewilding these jaguars we couldn’t possibly imagine we’d have such a fantastic outcome! It was something beyond our wildest dreams.

With lots of hard work, dedication and the support of great professionals and partners, we achieved amazing results, giving hope to the species on other biomes of Brazil, where jaguar populations are under threat.

Today Isa and Fera are completely wild and free. They have both reproduced in the wild! Isa gave birth to Aurora (female) and Fera gave birth to Ferinha (male) and Olympia (female).

Thank you very much to all of our partners who made this dream possible. Imasul, CENAP, ICMBio, Crás Campo Grande, Caiman Ecological Refuge , Mantenedouro Sta Rosa and LOG Nature among many other people who have helped us along the way.

In early July we plan to release the 2 females we have been taking care of in the Amazon. We hope to have the same excellent results with them.

Many thanks for all your support.
All the best,

Bellow a small video of them with their respective cubs.

Dear Friends,
Just wanted to give you all an update on our progress. Both Jaguars are doing extremely well and have learnt to hunt successfully. If all continues to go according to plan we expect to release them back into the wild in the early part of the second semester.
Please share this post with as many people as you can. Despite them being almost ready for release we still need to raise a bit more funds for it all to happen.
Many thanks and all the best,
