Oleh Vovk

$30,236 of $50,000 goal

Oleh Vovk is in a coma following a skiing accident. That ski trip was a birthday present for his son Daniel. Oleh was very careful and experienced skier, but accidents happen. He hit an ice patch, lost control and ran into a tree. Despite the fact that Oleh was wearing a helmet, he suffered a massive head trauma and multiple broken bones.
His prognosis is not good.

Oleh was self employed and worked very hard to support his family - three children 16,10 and 2, his wife Olena and his elderly parents. They all are devastated with no source of income. His entire family needs immediate help.

Please help!

First, I want to thank everyone for their caring and financial support for our family. It was an continues to be much needed as we have no income or benefits as Oleh was injured during a skiing accident.
Oleh is now home and we have been told not to expect any significant change. The doctors say he is still in a coma. I think there are degrees of awareness and he is aware of his family and responds to us, which is amazing and encouraging. I do hope and pray for improvements in his abilities to communicate and in mobility.

His discharge from an active care facility:

He has been home since Friday, April 13 – for some that’s not a good day but for us it was amazing. He is now in a place where he can look out on a yard he loves and is surrounded by family who deeply care for him . At the time he was released we had to truly scramble to get some of the equipment he needed. He came home in an ambulance and was carried into the house by 5 fireman who had him in a sling. The cost of an ambulance is $350.00 for a one way trip. With your help, we were able to bring him home and purchase some of the special equipment he needed – a special wheelchair, lift, commode, a bed with a mattress that moves to prevent bedsores, and chair for exercising. We were unable to obtain this equipment through various agencies because of the wait list for that equipment and because we did not have a shower on the main floor. We got that done and Oleh had his first shower two weeks ago. My mom (his mother-in-law) moved in and Oleh’s family are helping as best as they can. His dad is a saint. Mom and I are cleaning and showering him. Thanks to Kijiji we were able to buy used equipment at a very reasonable cost and Oleh’s dad, using coca cola to get rid of the rust, made this equipment very usable.

Today:

Our heads have been spinning getting the equipment Oleh needs, trying to arrange for assistance, as well as look after him and the kids. I understand Oleh does not qualify for physiotherapy because the doctors do not think his circumstance will change and so we have been exercising him to keep his muscles up. We try to put him into a chair twice a day and exercise him twice a day. Not sure whether I’m doing the right exercises but will muddle through. He is able, after a lot of prompting to raise his right arm , which is very encouraging. He cannot do anything with his left side and I think that may be related to the skull fracture on the other side. He had many other fractures as well as the brain injury.
He is not able to swallow and I did buy a deep suctioning unit but do not know how to use it and cannot find someone who is willing to do this for us. Will continue to search ways to help him get rid of the phlegm. He is on parenteral nutrition, which is concerning to us because it can last for years. Not sure if that is really the best. Am looking to adding real food to help him recover.

The future:

He has an appointment at the Spastic Clinic at the Glenrose on June 5 – we do not have a ramp from the house to the front and so cannot get him down the steps into a vehicle – also have not been able to arrange for a vehicle that could transport him. We understand DATS do not come out to our area. Still looking into that.

Our request:

We are very appreciative of your help and prayers, and hope you and others can continue to provide financial and other support to us during this very difficult time as we do not have any other source of income. Oleh was the only one who worked and we did not have insurance for this type of situation. We are truly indebted to each and every one and would ask that you pass this information to others who may also be able to assist us.
THANK YOU VERY MUCH!

Dear friends,

Once again I want to thank you for your help!

I wanted to share with you information about Oleg's state. He is already opening his eyes and can keep them open, but his eyes do not yet concentrate. He started moving his arm and leg (which are not broken), but doctors say that these are abnormal movements. The tube in the throat, through which oxygen was fed, was pulled; but oxygen is still fed through a small tube in the nose. In the hospital, he was brought to a stable condition, but fractures and other internal injuries / ruptures did not touch.
To date, doctors have said that he is ready for discharge, although there is not a single day that his indicators were stable. The oxygen level and heart beat) and they would give him Tylenol every single day. They want to transfer him in to "Long term facility". We are continuing to fight! He is strong, healthy and loved. Thank you all one more time!
Alena
