OLABE PROJECT - Basque Country

$6,602 of $20,000 goal

Raised by 18 people in 19 months

Until recently, Olabe was a 500 year old abandoned farm on the wild Basque coast. New owners Joseba and Joanna Attard have a clear vision to breathe new life into these ancient stones, converting Olabe and the surrounding land into a vibrant cultural hub - a place to be used for conferences, retreats, camps, courses, rural skills workshops, creative events and community activities.

Olabe's location is spectacular, nestled in an untouched, rural pocket of the Basque Country's coastline, where local language, culture and traditions naturally flourish.

The farmhouse itself is in desperate need of restoration and its 20 acres of surrounding pasture, woodland and ancient forests require responsibile and sustainable management if they are to thrive.

Joseba and Joanna are driven by a Christian faith and have a unique ability to connect with people on a very natural level. They speak English, Basque, Spanish and French. During the first year at Olabe they (and their 6 year old daughter Nahia), lived in a yurt and welcomed more than 600 people from over 25 different countries! Olabe is already proving itself to be a magnet for many different people, and is a wonderful platform for connecting with people.

Olabe is also helping people to re-address an imbalance prevelant in our lives and society today - a rapidly increasing dependency on technology, compared with an ever dwindling lack of knowledge and understanding of the natural world. We have traded the "God-given" for the "man-made" and the effects are alarming.

Please consider supporting this very unique and innovative project, and be a part of cultivating a lasting legacy in the Basque Country.

Eskerrik asko ta ikusi arte.

There's been a lot happening at Olabe this summer and some really important groundwork is being undertaken to ensure that the building is dry and that run-off from the hill to the north doesn't affect the foundations.

BIG NEWS is that two teams from the USA are travelling to Olabe to help out. The first is a team from Joy Ministries at the end of September, and the second is a team of professional carpenters from a church in Oregon.

We would like the carpenters to fit the middle floor in Olabe, but this means we need to raise funds to pay for the materials so that they are on site for when they arrive. We've set the target to $20,000.

It would be awesome if we could achieve this monumental goal!

Please consider supporting this mission in the Basque Country. For more information about the project, please email either info@olabe.eu or contact Joy Ministries in the US.

Eskerrik asko!

It is critical that drainage tile be put around the whole house to keep water away from the foundation so it does not go into the house. Next week, builders that did the roof are returning to excavate around the property and finish the drainage.

This is a big cost - around €11,000, but we are digging deep and making a go of it. I told him that we are short of the total cost, but he is fine for us to pay him the remainder as and when we can which is great.

If you have considered giving. This needs to be done before the rains begin this fall.
