Oisín competing in the world games

Hi.  I’m Oisin Putt.

As you can see from my profile picture, I’m a wheelchair user.

I was born with Spina Bifida and Hydrocephalus – basically the bones in my spine didn’t form properly around my spinal cord, and I had fluid on the brain.  Because of the severity of the condition, my parents were told I wouldn’t survive for long after birth.

That was fifteen years ago.

At the end of November I will be travelling to Portugal to represent Ireland in athletics at the 2017 IWAS (International Wheelchair and Amputees Sports Federation) World Games.   As well as competing on the world stage for the first time, I’ll also be given my classification for the 2020 Paralympics.

The doctors who delivered me all those years ago clearly didn’t reckon for my parents’ determination, and my own refusal to accept that there are things I can’t do.

Because yes, I can’t walk properly - but I have never let that stop me.  Earlier this year I won four medals in the Irish Wheelchair Association’s Leinster Grand Prix (including a Gold and two Silvers).  As well as athletics, I’m a passionate sailor, and wheelchair basketball player.  I have been awarded Junior Player of the year twice by  IWA for Basketball. I have won the National regatta in Sailing in 2013 and was on the Leinster team  that won the Presidents cup in 2015.

I was so so proud to be invited to join the Irish team in Portugal.  Representing my country is a dream come true.  It’s what I’ve been working towards for years, and is my stepping stone to the Paralympics.

Tá Oisín ag freastal ar Ghaelcholáiste an Phiarsaigh, Rath Fearnáin, agus beidh sé ag dul den Teastas Sóisearach i Meitheamh 2018.  He is an accomplished sailor and plays wheelchair basketball .

Oisín has been invited, through the Irish Wheelchair Association,  to attend the  IWAS ( International Wheelchair & Amputee Sports Federation World Games in Portugal 30 November/6 December 2017 as part of the Irish Team. )
He is fundraising to get himself there, and not only does he have to fund his own travel and accommodation, he also has to pay for a personal care assistant to travel with him,  and to make a contribution to the cost of the staff from the IWA who will accompany them.  Other expenses include specialised equipment -  track chair gloves etc.

Tá Oisín ag traenáil go dian  faoi láthair. He will compete in athletics, track chair racing in particular, in Portugal. As part of Oisín’s training, he has been taking part in as many road races as possible. He recently competed in the Leinster Grand Prix, winning a gold, two silver and  bronze medals.
Oisín would be extremely grateful for any sponsorship for his campaign.  Bheadh Oisín thar a bheith buíoch as aon tacaíocht airgid dá fheachtas.
