Get Ohana Polynesia to Dance Parade

Na Oiwi is a cultural education & advocacy group based in New York City . The purpose of this hui is to bring together Kanaka Maoli (Native Hawaiians), Hawaii natives and other like-minded people to celebrate our culture as well as that of other indigenous groups.
We focus on perpetuating cultural art forms and launguage as well as share information on Hawaiian history and contemporary issues. In addition, we are an advocacy group supporting Native Hawaiian civil and human rights.
Na Oiwi NYC has organized and all-inclusive group of hula practitioners and Polynesian dancers in each year of Dance Parade participation we call Ohana Polynesia. Every year we've steadily grown in numbers of dancers and in participating groups! This year we are looking to include more local hui to have as many kinds of dance represented as a real ohana Polynesia.
We see the importance of having more of a stand-out presence this year for several reasons. First, we are united as a collective to promote the upcoming arrival of Hawaiian voyaging canoe Hokulea (NYC arrival is slated for June 8th, 2016, World Ocean's Day).
The mission of Na Oiwi NYC is to educate the NYC community on Hawaiian history, culture, and voice. The New York Dance Parade is a wonderful forum of like- minded people who are a perfect audience to share this mission with the added visual representation in dance.
For the last two years during Dance Parade we went with a waa theme and resourcefully came up with make-shift designs to transform the vehicle traveling in the parade with us. This year we will amplify our efforts by creating a larger Hokulea motif, ample signage and by adorning ourselves and our float (a first for us!) with fresh foliage and flowers.

Another planned element for the float is to highlight one of our halau, the kupuna of Gracious Ladies in addition to our live musicians. The float will also carry a professional sound system on it that we will have to rent.
