On April 30, 2019 our good friend to many and trusted colleague at DBPD, Nick Gurucharri, was diagnosed with Stage III Cancer. Nick is the father of two children, Riley and Hailey, and is a hard working family man who balances a full-time career in Law Enforcement and a part-time position as a mechanic in professional motorsports. With the recent diagnosis and an aggressive treatment and recovery plan in place, Nick has had to withdraw from his position with the motorsports team for the season and will be intermittently out of work while he battles the cancer.
Nick will be under the care of a team of Doctors at Halifax Oncology and the medical group has initiated an immediate and aggressive plan for treatment. Nick is working hard to stay on task. This type of cancer is known to metastasize and needs to be addressed immediately.
During the past few weeks Nick has undergone blood work, MRI's, PET scan, CT scans, EKGs, and additional medical procedures to identify all of the cancerous cells. The chemotherapy and radiation treatments are expected to begin within the week and the initial plan is daily chemo and radiation for a duration of three months followed by surgical intervention. An additional six months or more of chemo will follow the surgery.
Nick is not the type of person to ask for help. He is eternally optimistic and has always had a “can do” attitude and approach to life. If Nick EVER needed to lean on family and friends now would be the time. The expenses associated with battling the cancer are enormous and while he has sufficient health insurance, the lost wages, medical co-pays, and the plethora of other costs associated with treatment are projected to cause a significant financial strain on his family. We simply ask that you reach as far as you can to spread the word and meet our goal.
The uncertainty is the toughest and it makes you realize that all you have is the present moment. Nick is remaining very optimistic, positive and are relying heavily on our faith. Let's all step up and help him out.
