Undersheriff Chad Murphy with the Rice County Sheriff’s Office was shot 4 times in the line of duty on April 29, 2019, in Sterling, Kansas. He was flown to Wichita, Ks. Chad is getting better every day, however two of the injuries have caused very limited mobility to both of his arms and he will have to spend an extended amount of time in rehab. With his wife and family by his side, we know he will make a full recovery! Until then, we all know how life continues on, bills are still due and food still has to be put on the table. Chad is my brother-in-law and we want to help with anything we can so that Chad can focus on getting better! So many people want to help, so we set up this fundraiser with Chad’s permission. Your thoughts and prayers are appreciated and are helping all of us through this tragic situation.

Finally able to sit for a bit and do an update on Chad! Last week was brutal! The therapy he does wears him out so much. It was his first full week of PT & OT back to back. His left arm seems to be healing, slowly, but surely. They told us maybe 3 months, so progress is slow but steady! More on that next Thursday after seeing the Orthopedist again. The right arm has been causing him considerable pain lately. We are hoping it's just a sign of more nerves waking up. It's a small concern, but we will know more after Wednesday afternoon.
A lot of you have been asking how you can help and how I'M doing....
To be very honest, I'm anxious, ecstatic, scattered, so very thankful, overwhelmed and grateful daily! But mostly...tired!
The most helpful is definitely just keep praying!! Those prayers are the #1 reason I still have my husband, and God knows I'd be lost without him Our love and gratitude is forever with you all!! God Bless!!

What a long week! And it's only Wednesday! Here's our last couple of days:

Monday: We left for Wichita for his early OT appt on Tuesday. OT went well, just mostly checking range of motion and strength. He gets a little massage to loosen the muscles. They decided to start Physical Therapy to strengthen his core muscles to help him get in and out of a bed. He is still sleeping in his lift chair at home, but at the hotel, it's hard to get out of bed with the muscle and nerve damage.

Tuesday Night 10pm: We get a call from our son that there is water in our basement. We have never had water, but this rain is brutal! We immediately checked out of the hotel and came home. I stayed up all night to pump water every 20 minutes until Chad woke up around 5:30am. I slept for a couple hours. We called Walton's and they were here right away!! The new sump pump was installed in record time and we were able to leave for Wichita for his appts which lasted until 4pm. We did see the ENT and his throat and voice box are as if nothing ever happened! The ENT doc was amazed. He said someone was definitely with him that day!

So now we are finally home and resting. His first PT is Friday right after OT. That will be tiring for him!

We also see the nerve specialist next Wednesday! He will do a nerve study. I will definitely update after that!
Love to you all!!!

What we have learned the last few days... Sorry I know some is probably repeat!

He still has a bullet in him from the back shot, that will remain there; right lower torso.

Left Arm: The clavicle is shattered beyond repair and they are letting it try to heal into a fused ball of bone and calcium. That will take 3-4 months. After that, we will know if more needs to be done with that.

Right arm:The MRI shows nerve roots are damaged and we have to have a nerve study done. The injury is called Neuropraxis with root injury at C5 & C6 on the spine. So we wait now to see an upper extremity specialist and a nerve specialist. Surgery is a last resort. The nerves may try to heal themselves and that's what the nerve study will tell us.
It's good from the elbow down. They usually won't do a nerve study for 4-6 weeks after injury because the nerves do heal on their own some.

We are home and he is resting! We start all over again Tuesday Morning!

Thanks again to you all!!! Much love

Just a quick update between appointments! We've seen the orthopedist and we have a better plan for therapy on his left arm now. The broken clavical is actually shattered. The doc says we will wait on that to try to repair on its own, as in the bones that are left hopefully fuse together and just form a ball/mass of bone. This process takes about 3 months. There is no way to just repair it. We will go back to him every 3-4 weeks to keep checking the progress. We will also be referred to a specialist for his nerve damage in his right arm, so more on that at a later date. They just took him back for his MRI. Hopefully we have those results at his 1:00 follow up with Wesley Trauma Clinic. Thank you all for following us on this journey. You have no idea how it helps us along, and prayers are SO APPRECIATED!!
