By constructing a living village we will create a fun, educational, and interactive environment with a longhouse, fishing weir, dance circle and gardens.  People of all ages will learn, enjoy, and experience our past with Natives that still use the teachings of their ancestors today.  From flint knapping to weaving, annual Village Days will have something for everyone.

To do this, we need YOUR help.  With a grant from the Outer Banks Community Foundation we are building a longhouse.  However, the longhouse, is only  one part and must be furnished  to truly bring the past to life.  This includes traditional pottery, baskets, mats, fishing and gardening tools...and that’s just the beginning!

With a minimum of $1000  we can purchase materials for our volunteer Native artisans to create the furnishings that will not only add life to the exhibit but also withstand the harshness of  island weather.

We've been doing GREAT!
Most of the structure of our longhouse is complete!

But there is still so much work left to do!

We are inviting volunteers to come Halloween weekend to work on cattail mats to cover our wonderful longhouse and we expect that A LOT will be accomplished.

However, we still need to outfit our volunteers with leather, pre-colonial regalia!

Men use 1-3 hides while women need 3-4 for EACH regalia being made!

We've also got plans for an artificial garden that we can't wait to share!

Leader of the project, Mitch Mahew, came in March to get some early work done! All of the poles to make the framework of the longhouse are now cut and bent into shape. There was even some progress made on covering the poles in the free form epoxy!

When they're stained in April, they'll look just like natural wood poles and stand up to our harsh island weather!

It has truly been my pleasure to work with this fantastic group of people who I consider my family. Volunteering for the past15 years has been an amazing journey! Their passion for Native American ways is truly remarkable! I am blessed to be a part of this village becoming a reality! Watching the long house come together takes our love of these grounds and these people to an all new high! From the bottom of my heart, Thank You!
