Event Travel for Noel Starblanket

$3,689 of $4,000 goal

My short documentary, From Up North, has been selected to screen at the Wairoa Māori Film Festival in Wairoa, New Zealand.  I want to make sure my friend and featured storyteller, Noel Starblanket, who has given so much to the community has an opportunity to attend.  Our documentary is about my experience working for the Truth and Reconciliation Commission recording the stories of Indian Residential School survivors. The story could not have been possible without the help of Noel sharing his experiences attending the Lebret Indian Residential School in very moving segments of the film.

Any funds raised will go towards Noel's travel and expenses to New Zealand and home. The festival takes place in June 2017, so the sooner we raise the funds, the better. We hope the film will help educate on the lasting impacts of the Indian Residential School legacy and having Noel present would be an added benefit to the New Zealand audience. We are grateful for any and all support!

We made it to the Wairoa Māori Film Festival in Wairoa, New Zealand to screen From Up North. Our film won the International Indigenous Award at the awards ceremony. I was so grateful Noel could be there to screen the film and also accept the award with me. We stayed a week on Piha Beach with other artists to shoot some shorts including one with Noel speaking Cree with a Māori language speaker.

Noel said to me a few days before we left, "Well, Trudy, you've given me the experience of a lifetime. One that I will never forget as long as I live." That was the goal all along. Thank you to each and every one of you who contributed and shared the campaign and who came to the screening. You all helped make it happen. I am beyond grateful for all the support.

A very generous offer from an organization came while we were in New Zealand to write a cheque for the remainder of the goal amount. If they give permission to share, I will gladly share their contribution.

Thank you all again from the bottom of my heart.
