No Portal Left Behind

Cats are scared when they enter shelters, and cramming them in a space that is too small on the best of days only makes matters worse. They are forced to lie right beside their litter pan with no room to stretch out. Can you imagine if you were locked in an outhouse and didn't know why? You have no control and you're scared. It's stressful. Stress brings about all sorts of illness. When a cat gets sick in a shelter, it increases the likelihood that she will be euthanized.
Not surprisingly, giving cats enough room to turn around and stretch keeps them healthier and happier while they wait for their new home. A few extra inches of floor space can mean the world to them. You can give them that by adding a portal, a plastic pass-through with a door that is placed between two small cages to double the space a cat gets in a shelter. It's still not home but it's OH so much better while they wait for their forever adopter to arrive. Just look at that stretch!
On February 7th, I paid forward the $10,000 award I received from being named a Maddie's Hero to a special fund that would allow shelters that want to portalize but can't afford the upfront costs to take the plunge.
I've seen the proof hundreds of times over-- portals pay for themselves by decreasing medical and, frankly, euthanasia costs.
But that doesn't change the fact that some shelters don't have the money to spend, even if they'll recoup the costs down the road. At some point in our lives, who among us couldn't use a little helping hand to get our ball rolling? My hope is that the recipients of the portals will Portal It Forward later on in life.
The drawing was originally scheduled for March 7. But here's the thing-- although I've long dreamed of starting something like this, I've been dreading today. You guys, the submissions for these portals have been among the most beautiful things I've seen in over 30 years of helping animals in shelters.
Shelter caregivers begging for portals their shelter can't afford just so they can provide better care and give each cat a fighting chance.
I can't bear the thought of saying no to a single one of them. They deserve it, the animals deserve it, and we, a community of animal lovers, together can do something about it.
Stainless steel cages last practically forever. One portal will forever change the experience of every single cat that stays in that cage for as long as that shelter is in operation.
You can make that happen. You can be the person to tell that shelter worker, "I see you. I respect what you are doing for animals, I support you, and I thank you." What gift can you give that will have that sort of lasting impact?
I am delaying the drawing one week in the hopes of telling you my story will inspire you to help me give a portal to every single shelter worker who asked for one. Please help me say YES.
