Hi! We are Matt and Connie Cookman and we have a dream to play Matt's original music in at least one prison in each of the 50 states of America, all in ONE YEAR!
Our mission in life is to be good stewards with what God gives us!! Well, He has given us original songs and a passion for prison ministry.
It all started 5 years ago when we volunteered in a prison for the first time. Now we go in every week, Matt plays music and Connie teaches life skills. We've learned that by simply giving them our time, we prove these men matter and they are not forgotten.
We know stories that will break your heart! ...the addict who’s father gave him his first hit of heroin as a “gift” for his 16th birthday…. or the 45 yr old man whose eyes filled with tears as he described forgiving his mother for kicking him out of the house when he was 11. We realize that if we had the same childhood as some of these, we could easily be in prison right now! I'm not saying they didn't make choices that landed them there.... only that we have acquired a new sense of compassion.
We have also learned there is a vibrant church alive and well behind bars. (Those who have been forgiven much, love much.) These are our brothers and sisters and they need encouragement and inspiration to work for the Kingdom right where they are!
God planted this dream in Matt's heart the summer of 2015. In faith, we bought an RV, (aka The ‘V’), which will provide the transportation. We can run our business from the road. So, all we need now is an invitation into 50 prisons AND a little help from our friends!! The money raised will mostly pay for travel expenses for Matt and Connie and even the band, when possible. We also want to leave Matt's music and some books at the prisons we visit.
We believe we have a message of life and light to carry into these dark places. We sense that somehow by sowing seeds in all 50 states, the body of Christ behind bars in this nation will be connected in spirit to come into agreement with each other and for God's Kingdom purposes in this earth! Who has more time to pray than inmates? He has put watchmen on our walls.
We plan to kick-off this tour with a trip to Texas to help with a national day of prayer for prisons to be broadcast on TBN. That call could come any day now, and the clock will start ticking!
