Surgery for Scorch

Donation protected
Sunday morning at around 3:00 am I received a phone call from Devin, a roomate, saying that his 8 month old cat Scorch had been badly hurt. Devin had been on his way out of the room when the cat suddenly bolted and tried to squeeze out of the doorway. Without realizing it, Devin had shut the door on the cats left arm, and of course the cat twisted itself to get it out which ended up causing more damage. It was obvious that something was wrong with Scorch so Devin immediately drove to an emergency vet clinic located in Newmarket on Journey's End. He was very upset when he called me as the vet had threatened to keep the cat and do the "humane" thing since he didn't have the 600 dollars for the x-ray or money to do the surgery on the spot. I rushed over as quickly as I could and finally got the vet to release the cat with the promise that action would be taken by Monday. It cost us 300 in total which was a sedation fee and emergency visit costs. The vet also gave the arm a splint and wrapped it tightly in a tensor like bandage which was appreciated. The vet estimated the cost of the surgery would be around 3000, or we could pay less and have the arm amputated, but for us amputation is not an option when the cats arm can be saved.

The rest of Sunday and most of Monday was spent contacting vet clinics from Beaverton to Scarborough to see if anyone was able to perform a surgery without money upfront and a promise to pay it back in installments. By the end of Monday we had no luck. Every single clinic needed at least 80% of the money upfront. Devin, his girlfriend Logan, and myself all tried the next option which was to see if we could get a loan to cover the costs by contacting Petcard and filling out all the necessary application forms, but again, no luck.

On Tuesday morning they had finally come up with enough money to take Scorch to Beaverton where he received a second opinion and x-rays of the arm. It was determined he had a SPIRAL FRACTURE and most definitely would need surgery. They informed them that they had a vet there who could possibly perform the surgery at a cost of around 1000, but he would have to assess the injury himself first. If the surgery is out of the vets expertise, which it may be, then they would send Scorch to a clinic where the surgery can be performed for between 1,500-3000$ Beaverton Crossroads was kind enough to let them take their cat home, as the pain had decreased significantly and Scorch was starting to act more like his old self.

The vet will be assessing Scorch's arm this week and an appointment for surgery will be made, but they still need the money upfront to cover the costs .

We reach out to you, animal lovers, like ourselves, asking for any donation at all so that Scorch can continue to comfortable use his arm for the remainder of his life. He would be very thankful for your kindness, as would we.
