Naturopathic Lobby Day 2016

License Naturopathic Physicians in Indiana:

This January, the Indiana Association of Naturopathic Physicians (INANP) will spend a "day on the hill" at the Indiana Statehouse hosting a lobby day for our State Representatives. At this event, we will be answering questions and informing our Representatives about Naturopathic Medicine and the benefits of licensure. Please help the INANP fund this historic event! Any amount will be helpful toward our cause.

Naturopathic physicians/doctors (NDs) practice a system of medicine aimed at preventing, diagnosing and treating conditions of the human body and mind. They are trained at four-year medical institutions as primary care physicians with an emphasis in natural medicine and patient-driven health. They use an individualized and holistic approach to treating patients, and the principles of naturopathic medicine guide their treatment strategies, favoring non-invasive treatment and, similar to conventional medicine, encourage minimal use of surgery and drugs when possible. Currently, there are licensure laws for NDs in 25 States, Provinces and Territories, with additional Bills introduced for adoption on the legislative floor.

There are currently eight US Department of Education-accredited naturopathic medical schools in North America. ND training covers all aspects of family health from prenatal to geriatric care. They are trained to perform physical examinations, take thorough health, nutritional and lifestyle histories, and order laboratory and diagnostic tests. Treatment modalities utilized by NDs include diet and clinical nutrition, behavioral change recommendations, botanical medicine, dietary supplements, physical medicine, and more. Depending on the licensure laws in a particular State, NDs may also perform minor office procedures and surgeries, administer vaccinations, obtain a Drug Enforcement Agency (DEA) number and prescribe a formulary of prescriptive medications. Some of the ND educational programs also include additional training in acupuncture and oriental medicine. NDs are subject to the same laws about reporting disease outbreaks, births and deaths as other physicians.

Prevention and health promotion are cornerstones of naturopathic medicine, making NDs prime candidates to aid Indiana and the United States in the primary care shortage that is currently being faced. NDs spend an average of 45 minutes with new patients and 30 minutes with established patients per visit, allowing time for plenty of education related to health conditions. NDs currently see patients in private practice as well as in major hospitals and universities throughout the country, including IU Health in Indiana. The licensure of NDs in Indiana would provide a valuable health resource for its citizens.

For the past two years, the United States Senate has recognized the value of licensed NDs through Resolutions encouraging Americans to learn more about the value of naturopathic medicine in providing safe, effective, and affordable health care, and suggesting that NDs can help address the primary care shortage.

States that license naturopathic physicians allow the health care consumer access to physician-level, safe, effective, evidence-based natural health care. They set standards for education of NDs and restrict the title "naturopathic doctor” and “naturopathic physician" to those licensed practitioners trained at institutions accredited by the Council on Naturopathic Medical Education. Naturopathic doctors who would be eligible for this bill are graduates from accredited four-year colleges of naturopathic medicine.
