Police Officer needs your help

I met Darryl met a year ago and we instantly became friends.  We are both Veterans (I am Disabled) and we clicked immediately.  I think we became friends in a matter of hours the first day alone.

It was soon after Darryl and I met that I started to hear the horrific battle he is facing with his employer, The City of Garland, Texas.  You see, Darryl is also a Police Officer for the Garland Police Department.  Darryl has been an officer for many years in Texas and in California as well.  Darryl was on duty one night, about 2 years ago, blocking traffic for an accident on the George Bush Turnpike when a  drunk driver collided with his patrol car and Darryl had to be the one rescued. Typically, the first responders are helping their citizens, this time it was one of their own.  Now he is battling the Workmans Compensation carrier (the city) to get fixed so that he can have the ability to work and some semblance of pain-free life after the accident.  Neither of which has happened to date.  The video is compiled from the 911 call from a witness (you can hear Darryl talking) and dash cam video to see him in the car. Its sickening.

Darryl was knocked unconscious when he hit his head on the drivers window, which injured his neck and low back. The fire department had to lift him out of the car and took him to the hospital by ambulance. He has been diagnosed with a Traumatic Brain Injury, herniated disk in his neck and low back. He has needed surgery since the accident, but has had to live with the pain while fighting the city. His head injury has also gone untreated, and now he has trouble remembering things, and stutters when he talks sometime. And I can tell he struggles when trying to concentrate.

I have created this GoFundMe account in order to help Darryl with his current (over $20,000) and future legal fees (another $25,000) in this battle; medical care (Darryl has to use his own insurance for two surgeries while his case is being processed so he has to pay deductibles and percentage) and income while he is recouperating. The city made him use all of his leave bank so while going through this fight. Now he doesn’t have any sick time to receive income while he is recouperating from the surgeries.

It is a shame that the same city he swore to protect and defend is the one that you have to fit in order to get medical care. I cannot believe that our first responders are being treated this way.  It makes me sick thinking about it, that is why I had to write this.  Raising this money for the legal fees will only be the start.  There has already been documents forwarded to our local representative to get legislature changed that surrounds how we take care of our first responders.  This has to change.

Please forward this to your friends and family by posting on your social media. The only way to fix this is to let you state representatives know about the problem.

I will update as Darryl’s case progresses.

Thank you in advance
