Sexual Assault Records Request

In my capacity as a reporter and editor at the University Daily Kansan, I have worked to report on how the University of Kansas and public universities handle sexual assault. 

This story was the result of an initial set of records requests that indicated the number of sexual misconduct reports KU's Office of Institutional Opportunity and Access, the subsequent investigation length, and who the reported conduct involved. 

What's still missing from this picture, however, is where the conduct in these reports took place. On Oct. 3, I filed another request under the Kansas Open Records Act asking for these records. 

After an initial denial, the University agreed to produce these records at a cost of $1,057.50. They also agreed to waive half of the assessed fee, bringing the total owed to $528.75.

I am asking for the public's help to raise the money for these records, as I feel there is no greater interest to public safety on a college campus than where sexual misconduct is reported.

Any money raised over the goal of $529 will be donated to the Society of Professional Journalists Legal Defense Fund.
