On Tuesday (2/24/15) I took in a dog that needed some care and attention and a new home. She had been badly injured from a car accident, but nobody really seems willing to admit the actual events that occurred with Theia's injuries. But here's a general overview of what happened and what I found out from the vet I took her to this morning that had seen her prior to when I took her in. Theia was hit by a car  that resulted in a dislocated jaw and some minor scrapes and injuries to the body. At the time of the hit, it was thought she wasn't going to make it. So somebody tried to euthanize her by hitting her over the head with a hammer and left her in a ditch. A few days later, Theia survived the events came wondering back onto the farm she had been severely sick and injured. A farm hand took her to the vet for help. She was hit by a car on a Tuesday, and found and taken to the emergency vet on a Saturday. Due to the events, Theia now suffers nasal nerve and sinus damage from the blunt force trauma to the head and cannot breath through her nose. Due to the accident and dislocated jaw, her mouth and throat are very swollen and she has difficulty breathing through her mouth. Overall, she has difficulty breathing and is overly exhausted from not being able to sleep. She is in desperate need of extensive medical procedures to fix her nasal damage and reset her jaw. I agreed to foster her until she finally found a loving home. Due to the new information, I am now willing to do whatever it takes to raise the money and help her receive the proper medical attention needed and make sure she gets placed in a family where this will never happen to her again!

Update 11

I just wanted to post a quick update. Theia is currently back at WSU for what we hope Is her last and final surgery. The first stent that was entered was no successful as the damaged scar tissue grew threw the open mesh like stent. We will try one more time with a closed stent to assure no tissue grows through. This particular type poses a greater risk of infection so we used this option as a last resort. Please cross your fingers this is successful as this is our last and final option to get her fixed up and breathing correctly. Regardless of whether this stent is a success, Theia will still be able to live a long happy life and will continue to be taken care of. :)

I want to say thank you again to each and every one of you. Theia has been officially adopted by our family and is currently back at WSU for her post surgery follow up. She is suffering from a little infection that we hope to get cleared up and her back to breathing normal. Otherwise the stent has been a complete success so far and hopefully back home in no time.

I used to be troubled by the fact that people would call me in my role at WSU's veterinary college and complain about cases like this. They all went something like this: "That much money for a damned dog! And when there are children in this town alone without a decent pair of underwear? My God people have lost their minds." After one particularly frustrating day I went up and spoke to our counseling psychologist and longtime friend, Dr. Kathy Ruby. Wisely she said, in a sense they are correct and at the same time, "Why would anyone ever look any act of benevolence as something negative? Especially when one considers most people and animals in need will never feel the warmth or benefit of such kindness. There is always far more need than there is charity. We should instead celebrate any act of giving because it is those people who encourage us to be better, more generous people toward any cause." I have slept soundly since. Hi there. Thank you for caring for this milagrita! She probably needs help with her eyes as I saw she cannot blink well....she will dry her corneas out and develop a pigment army keratitis. Tacrolimus drops or possibly lid surgery might help.

Bless you for tending to this beautiful animal in need. With the monies that are being collected, I also pray that you pay it forward with other animals in need. Shame on those using this page to promote donations for themselves or others. And, ESPECIALLY those that say, "it's JUST a dog"! Don't you know that dogs/cats are the only company that many in our society have. Shame, shame.

What a wonderful story of a will to live and great kindness. I hope there are many happy years ahead. Came across the story completely by chance whilst searching for online content for my son's band "THEIA" here in the UK. So glad I did. My wife and I have 6 dogs and do holidays for dogs, so this story touched us deeply. All the best.

It's a good thing you do. Animals deserve a shot at a good life, and Theia deserves a good Forever Home! (And I suspect she already found it with you!) In 90 minutes I head South to Fredericksburg, VA to pick up a 3 1/2 y/o Rescue Cavalier King Charles Spaniel to Foster until he finds the Forever Home he deserves. Thankfully, he was not abused or mistreated by people, but he was part of a home brew Breeding Operation, and later shunted around to different owners, evening being sold on Craig's List - a real no-no for good homing of a pet!! He needs a little stability and love until he can be adopted out to a vetted family by a very caring CKCS Rescue group. Hopefully, I and my 8 y/o Tri Cav can help him get ready for that loving Forever Home...

Thanks for your comments/story below, Charlie Powell. I can appreciate that many people don't or can't understand why some other folks might help an animal in need rather than another person, but in truth... there are so very many resources out there for people in need...not so many for animals in need. We're like the Red Cross for abused & neglected animals & I'll never stop helping animals in need as long as I'm able to, (just as I'd never turn a child in need away). Theia & needy animals like her.... they still love unconditionally, even though they've been so very unloved -- my question is: how can anyone NOT help them???

I came back to help again after getting your recent update. I hope the next surgery makes Theia. I was born in Moses Lake and recently had to put a pet of 11 years down after she contracted cancer in the mouth. It was not fair as otherwise she was in great shape. This donation is in memory of Misty. One of God's other Beautiful Creations. Best of Luck to You All!
