Newspapers for Inmates

$5,850 of $5,850 goal

Without our help, people incarcerated at the Fairbanks Correctional Center will soon lose regular access to The Fairbanks Daily News-Miner. Grant funding for the paper ended last May, and interim funds have been exhausted. Because FCC residents have no access to the internet, the local paper helps them maintain their connection to life on the outside. Inmates rely on newspapers for information about job and training opportunities, housing options, church services, obituaries, birth announcements, completion of  GED coursework, and so much more. We believe these kinds of connections benefit all of us.

Newspapers for Inmates’ immediate goal is to provide 25 daily subscriptions of the Fairbanks Daily News-Miner to the 250 men and women incarcerated at FCC, and 5 daily subscriptions to the young people living at the Fairbanks Youth Facility.

$13 purchases one subscription for one month,
$39 purchases one subscription for three months,
$78 purchases one subscription for six months,
$156 purchases one subscription for one year,
$5850 funds the entire project goal of 30 papers a day for fifteen months.

You have the opportunity to support this lifeline to our community by pitching in what you can.

Most of us cannot imagine daily life without easy access to our computers, tablets, laptops and phones. For those of us who have been incarcerated or had a family member or friend incarcerated, it may feel almost impossible to maintain a connection, given the separation between those inside and those out. The News-Miner helps fill that void.

"I’m in a world within a world…. I’m separated from society… The newspaper gives me hope that one day I may be reconnected with society and lets me feel part of the whole. Even though I’m separated. I still belong to the human race and I want to participate in its prosperity and be with it in its times of suffering."  Anonymous, Fairbanks Correctional Center
